  all items 2 through 8 need to be turned in with final draft
  TOPICS: topics are arranged in order of difficulty. Select a topic from either the "A," "B," or "C" category. The maximum grade you can receive for the essay is based on the category.
  "C" topics
    1. Explain the role of three minor characters in West Side Story.
    2. Trace the variety of conflicts. What are they? How are they resolved?
  "B" topics
    1. How does the staging (music, dance, background, lighting, etc.) help or hinder the story?
    2. Select and discuss one theme
  "A" topics
    1. Discuss West Side Story as a tragedy. (The hero brings about his or her own downfall because of a character flaw.)
    2. Discuss the role of uncontrollable forces (society, family, actions and attitudes of others, etc.) in the musical.
  REQUIREMENTS 1. introductory paragraph with thesis
    2. three full body paragraphs with topic sentences, full support (minimum of 3 points with detail), concluding sentences
