Introduction
This is Kenjifs 8th
year English class essay about his special place. He chose Brittus
Beach in Ireland as the place, where he gained marvelous experiences in his
summer vacatioon. I am very much fond of this short essay
and want to share it here. Great job, Kenji!
- Your
Dad.
On the outskirts of County Wicklow, an estate runs alongside a cliff over looking the
ocean. This estate is littered with rather small homes that have their own yard
and a soccer pitch nearby. The
field has two rotted old wooden goals.
That are bent in such a manner that it makes it easy to score from a
corner. You can see, approaching
from the sea, on the right of the field, a gigantic plain of grass. There is a castle a little inland of the
cliff. The castle is not in use and
is off limits to everyone. The
keeper of this place, a frustrated old man, has become little more than a nuisance
to the nearby kids that roam the hills causing chaos for the neighbors and
drawing on the walls of a castle.
The kids usually come and throw rocks at the windows, making bets on who
will finally hit one and occasionally creating bonfires in the central palisade. The palisade is
surrounded on all sides by a wall.
Although the wall is some 10 feet thick and contains many window slits,
it is at least 30 feet tall. Throughout
the wall there are rooms scorched by flames and blackened from the smoke. Elevated above the palisades is one
building that strikes awe into the minds of onlookers. This one is not as wrecked or scorched as the others probably from the grand feeling one gets
stepping inside and looking at the great feat that this one building proves is
possible. The
pillars that line the front of the building, Greek. The lone arch that
spans the front of the building, Roman. The intertwining of these different
cultures demands respect contrary to what these mischievous thieves are willing
to give. Somehow
this place reminds me of a lost outpost of a conquering nation decades ago.
