Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. National History


Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was founded on January 13, 1913 on the campus of Howard University by 22 Distinguished and Determined undergraduate women. These women had a collective vision to promote academic excellence and to provide support to the community. With this vision they founded the organization Delta Sigma Theta.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide services and programs to promote human welfare. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has a membership of over 200,000 predominately African American college educated women. The sorority has over 900 chapters located in the United States, Japan, Germany,Bermuda, Haiti, the Bermuda, the Republic of Korea and the Virgin Islands.

The major programs of the Sorority are based upon the Five Point Thrust
Economic Development
Educational Development
International Awareness and Involvement
Physical and Mental Health
Political Awareness and Involvement

Some of the National porgrams under the Five Point Thrust are:

Delta Habitat for Humanity,Preparing our Sons for Manhood, School America, Black College Convocation, Delta Days in the Nations Capitol, and Delta Alcohol,Drus Abuse, and AIDS Community Education (ADACE)

National Headquaters is located at 1705-1709 New Hampshire Ave. Washington, DC
