This weekend I am the chaplain for a Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat. Here is a description of the retreat: “Rachel's Vineyard is a safe place to renew, rebuild and redeem hearts broken by abortion. Weekend retreats offer you a supportive, confidential and non-judgmental environment where women and men can express, release and reconcile painful post-abortive emotions to begin the process of restoration, renewal and healing.” Please pray for those participating in this retreat.

By a nice coincidence, March 25 is International Day of the Unborn Child. Nine months before the celebration of our Lord’s Birth, March 25 is the Feast of the Annunciation, the moment when Jesus was conceived in the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus began his human existence, like you and me, as a tiny embryo. March 25 is a good moment to not only remember the mystery of the Incarnation, but to also pray for new mothers and fathers and for their unborn child.

This week you can make a significant contribution to the defense of unborn children. On Thursday the Washington State Board of Pharmacy is holding a hearing regarding the right of conscience for pro-life pharmacists. Please read the flier titled Washington Pharmacists’ Right of Conscience is Endangered. Your presence at the hearing on Thursday morning will make a difference. Even more, these faithful pharmacists need our prayers, support and encouragement.

On the reverse side of the same flier, you will find information about a beautiful man: Servant of God Ramon Sainz Orozco. He has a close connection to our parish because he is the maternal great-uncle of Deacon Abel Magaña Sainz. Next Sunday (Palm Sunday) we will be placing his picture in the south portable after the 12:30 p.m. Mass. Please join us at that time.

Also next Sunday we will inaugurate the new processional cross. I thank those who made the donations to purchase this beautiful cross. It will enhance our celebration of Holy Week and of the saving mysteries during the entire year.

I encourage you to take full advantage of Holy Week. If you have not yet made your Lenten Confession, Fr. Ramon and I will be available this Friday evening at 7 p.m. for all those who desire to receive this healing sacrament.

This past week Fr. Ramon attended the Archdiocesan Marriage Advocacy Training, along with two Holy Family parishioners. Many people do not take part in the sacraments because of an invalid marriage. If you know someone who is in that situation, please encourage them to talk with me or Fr. Ramon. There is hope and healing.

Finally, if you haven’t already done so, I encourage you to read Parish Priest: Father Michael McGivney and American Catholicism. The book is co-authored by Douglas Brinkley, who is Clark professor of history and director of Theodore Roosevelt Center at Tulane University and Julie M. Fenster, an award-winning author of historical books, whose articles have appeared in American Heritage, the New York Times and American History. Fr. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus and could become the first American-born parish priest to be canonized.

On Palm Sunday we will have a special commemoration after our 12:30 Mass. In the renovated south portable we will place a picture of Servant of God Ramón Sainz Orozco. This year is the 70^th anniversary of his martyrdom. After suffering cruel tortures he was put to death on March 15, 1937. Ramón Sainz was a devoted husband and a small businessman in the town of Arandas, Jalisco. The picture shows him wearing the emblem of all night Eucharistic Adoration, which he helped organize and maintain in Arandas. Government officials condemned him to death for hiding priests during a time of persecution in Mexico. Two years ago Deacon Abel Magaña Sainz was present for the exhumation of the body, a required step in the process of beatification. Servant of God Ramón Sainz is the maternal great-uncle of Deacon Abel. You are invited next Sunday, April 1, to join us in the south portable at about 2 p.m.. After placing the picture we will say the following Prayer for the Canonization of Ramón Sainz Orozco:

Lord God, Holy Father, in your Son Jesus Christ, you have made known to us your saving love. We ask you to bless your people with the canonization of Ramón Sainz Orozco, so that Jesus Christ, the Way, the Truth and the Life, might be present on the lips and in the hearts of men and women of our time. Thus may we participate in the inheritance of your saints and chosen ones. We ask this through Jesus Christ Our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen. Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory Be.

El Domingo de Ramos habrá una conmemoracion especial despues de la misa de 12:30. En el edificio renovado por voluntarios de la comunidad hispana, vamos a poner un retrato del Siervo de Dios Ramon Sainz Orozco. Este años es el aniversario 70 de su martirio. Despues de sufrir torturas horribles, murió el 15 de marzo de 1937. Era un esposo devoto y un comerciante en el pueblo de Arandas, Jalisco. El retrato lo muestra con el signo de Adoracion Nocturna, que el ayudó a organizar y mantener. Uficiales del gobierno lo condenó por esconder a sacerdotes durante el tiempo de persecucion en Mexico. Hace dos años, el Diacono Abel Magaña Sainz estuvo presente para la exhumacion de su cuerpo, un paso necesario en el proceso de beatificacion. Les invito el proximo domingo, 1ero de abril, estar con nosotros a 2 p.m. Despues de poner la foto, rezaremos la Oracion para la Canonizacion de Ramon Sainz Orozco:

Senor, Padre santo, que en tu Hijo nos salva, te suplicamos que bendigas a tus Pueblo con la pronta canonizacion de Ramon Sainz Orozco, para que Jesucristo Camino, Verdad y Vida, este en las obras y en la mente, en los labios y en el corazon de los hombres y mujeres de nuestro tiempo, y asi participamos de la herencia de tus santos y elegidos. Por Jesucristo nuestro Señor. Padre Nuestro. Ave Maria. Gloria.

Este fin de semana soy el sacerdote para un Retiro del Viñedo de Raquel Creo que irá bien con las lecturas que hablan de nueva vida en Cristo, la recuperación de alegría, perdón del pecado y el mandato de no pecar mas. Aquí es un resumen del propósito de un Retiro del Viñedo de Raquel:

"Los retiros de fin de semana del Viñedo de Raquel son una bella oportunidad para cualquier persona que haya padecido del dolor emocional o espiritual de un aborto. El retiro es un proceso especifico diseñado para ayudar a recibir la piedad y la compasión de Dios. Es también una oportunidad de traer a la superficie sentimientos reprimidos y de deshacerse del dolor, la vergüenza y la ira . Hay muchos ejercicios y ritos que ayudan a lamentar la perdida del hijo que no nació y a aceptar y recibir el perdón de Dios. El retiro concluye con un Servicio Conmemorativo y una Misa de Resurrección. El fin de semana ayudará al alma a encontrar su voz y a transformar el dolor del pasado en amor y esperanza."

Agradezco sus oraciones por los que están participando en este retiro – y por todas las mujeres y hombres con el corazón quebrantado a causa de un aborto. Es la herida mas profunda de nuestra sociedad – y de nuestra Iglesia. Cuanto necesitamos escuchar las bellas palabras de Jesús: "Tampoco yo te condeno. Vete y ya no vuelvas a pecar."

Por casualidad el dia 25 de marzo es el Dia del Niño por Nacer. La Biblia nos cuenta que la existencia humana de Jesús comenzó con su concepción en el vientre de la Virgen María, cuando el Ángel Gabriel le dijo: “No temas, María, porque has encontrado favor de Dios. Concebirás en tu seno y darás a luz un hijo, al que pondrás el nombre de Jesús.”

Desde muy temprano en la historia de la Iglesia, los cristianos celebraron la Concepción Virginal de Jesús el Día 25 de marzo. En el Credo decimos que Jesús fue “concebido por obra del Espíritu Santo y nació de la Virgen María.” Jesús comenzó su vida humana como todos nosotros como un embrión pequeño. Como toda mamá, la Virgen María se sintió la presencia del Niño Jesús en su seno. Cuando María fue a visitar a prima Isabel, parece que hubo comunicación entre los dos niños por nacer: Juan el Bautista y Jesús. Isabel le dijo a María, “Apenas llegó tu saludo a mis oídos, el Niño saltó de alegría en mis entrañas.” La ciencia moderna concuerda con lo que la Biblia enseña: La vida humana comienza con la concepción y merece respeto y protección desde aquel momento.
