A LETTER TO CURRENT GOTHS

I’ve been part of the scene for 8 years, and I’d entered the scene with the impression that it was about individualism, self-expression, and seeing the world in ways that “normal” people do not. I found that Goths do tend to go a step further to learn about this world in comparison to those that are considered to be “normal”, whom which often seems governed and educated by media rather than themselves when it comes to proper information and learning of new things.

But as the years have gone by I’ve slowly witnessed the Gothic scene become more superficial. It has become quite plastic and uniform, and the Gothic snobbery has grown.
There always seems to always be this endless quest for Gothdom; It seems like Gothics are always trying to prove who’s Gother than thou. Which doesn’t sound like a very individualistic to me, and is more of the actions of a people pleasing poser.

Fashion is a form of self-expression. Again, I don’t believe in proving how “Goth” you can be, so I don’t really enjoy seeing Goths rank each other based upon on how expensive their outfit is. If you are Gothic, you should know that the Goth look can be VERY expensive. Not everyone can afford the best costumes and props. Velvet, vinyl, leather, boots, and elegant 17th century garb isn’t cheap.
I often find that many elder Goths are angry about what the Gothic scene has turned into. Firstly, I will point out that older Goths often turn their noses up to younger Goths. I think if the older generation actually spent the time teaching the younger generation about the scene things would be different. Old school Goth is very subculture, so subculture it’s like a big secret that those new to the Gothic scene haven’t a clue about the roots of Gothic or what it is about. To forget your roots is to forget your identity. Look at the Goth scene now in 2005, would you say that the Goth scene has somewhat lost its identity? If you are a Gothic that has been part of the scene for at least 5 yrs I do advise taking a baby bat or two under your wing to help spread the proper knowledge of the Gothic scene.
