A LETTER TO NEW GOTHS

If you are new to the Gothic scene you should spend more time worrying about what NOT to do than what to do. Gothics often turn their noses up to younger Gothins because younger Gothics often go about the scene all wrong. Gothics do not like to be stereotyped and do not like people who fill those stereotypes. Here is a list of what being Gothic is NOT about.

1. Worshipping Satan
2. Being evil and spooky
3. Worshipping Marilyn Manson
4. Trying to be a Vampire
5. Hating anything happy
6. Being depressed all the time
7. Looking like a zombie

I will not spend the time ranting about what Goth is, but I will say one thing, it is all basically about being your own person. If you pretend to enjoy dressing a certain way, pretend to enjoy listening to certain bands, and pretend to act a certain way it makes you only a poser/wannabe. Gothics do not like posers, and can usually spot them a mile away!

FASHION:
To be your own person in the Gothic scene you have to discover what kind of clothes you like by experimenting. Try different looks, find what you like. Many Gothics spend a lot of time developing, changing, and evolving their own unique look. It’s ok and perfectly natural. You cannot let Gothics expect you to afford the best of Gothic clothing. Gothic clothing can be VERY expensive. But it isn’t what you wear, it’s how you wear it. A lot of Gothics improvise to create a look. You can find clothes from different places, whether it be a mall or a second hand store to make complete outfits. Accessories come both expensive and cheap, and they often help to pull off a look. Look at other Gothics for fashion examples, or ask them for tips.
MUSIC:
So you were formally a fan of pop music? …And you still like some of the music? IT’S OK! Gothics often claim to be individuals, having your own likes and dislikes IS part of being an individual. You can like Gothic music and other types of music at the same time. You don’t have to pretend to only enjoy “Goth” things. There is a whole list of music familiar to the Goth scene on my website on my MUSIC page. You can also sample music through ww.mp3.com and other free download sites to discover what music groups you like. If a Gothic tries to tell you that you’re not Goth because you don’t listen to enough Gothic bands just let them know that you’re only being an individual.
KNOWLEDGE:
A word of the wise, if you don’t know what something is don’t pretend to know! Many Gothics spend the time learning about the occult, the supernatural, philosophies, religions, and other things. Don’t feel bad if you have no idea about what they’re talking about, but don’t be ignorant about it either. Knowledge is power, spend the time to find out about topics that you don’t understand. Don’t be afraid to ask people for information, go to the library, or do a word search on the internet. There is also a series of words and terms that Gothics are often familiar with, take the time to look through my TERMINOLOGY page to learn a few things.
