She Didn't Know Me-Feedback

"She Didn't Know Me" Has an Impact
I received these email messages on Sept. 9, 1998. They made me very proud. Thank you, Jeanna for being so wonderful.

I just wanted to let you know that the your telling the story of the golden retriever that died on the road may have saved another ones life.

That sad tale never left my mind or my heart.

One evening last month I was driving a friend home and we were on a very busy street. We came upon a young golden retriever dodging in and out of traffic. It was about 10:30 and very dark.

My first thought was to get her to safety. Your story was in my minds eye.

My friend is not the dog lover that I am, but that did not stop me. It took awhile, but I was able to coax her off the road.

It was a very close call a few times with the cars whizzing by. She was so frightened and let me pick her up and place her in the back seat of my car.

Upon arriving home, I found her tags had a name and address.

Her owners did not realize that she was even gone. (I still wonder at how that could be).

Within the hour Sugar was home with her owners.

I have a golden retriever of my own and would hope someone would do the same for her or any pet on the road. Would I have stopped if I had not read your story? Probably, but I may have taken more time to consider it meaning the difference between her getting hit or being safe.

So, you may consider yourself a hero of this rescue story, also.

Gosh, I would be honored to have my story told on your page. Pass the kleenex, please! Only someone like you could know how rewarding it is to see an animal to safety.

Did I tell you that before Sugar left that she stood to put her paws on my shoulders as if to give me a hug? That was more meaningful to me than any thing I have ever been given.

I truly feel that a dog knows when she or he has been saved. Although I bought my golden as a puppy, I will adopt a rescue in the future.

My golden is now almost 14 years old. I`ve decided to adopt a senior golden next time around. I also have a silky terrier that I adopted when he was four. His owner was killed in an accident.

Dogs are my passion. Not for showing or working, but just to love. I can see that passion in your web page.

Thanks for answering my email and thinking it valuable enough to add to your web site. I do not have a site, but I spend hours reading these kind of sites.

This sure means a lot to me. Hopefully, someone else will get the message to stop and help as I did.

Another Time, Another Place, Same Story

The same type thing happened to me on December 31, 1998. I went to the store at the front of my neighborhood and as I was backing my truck out to leave, someone hit a black Chow on the highway.

I stopped to see if she was okay, trying to keep from getting hit myself, as I knelt down to her, I could see that she was not going to make it. It was night and the vets in the area were already closed, it would take me 30 minutes to get her to the emergency hospital for animals.

So I just sat there and talked to her and rubbed her gently, she seemed to relax some. Finally two very nice gentlemen stopped to help me, one put a caution cone out for me to keep me from getting hit. I did not know what else to do for her. She had on a collar but no tags, I have seen her many time running loose in my neighborhood, so I know she has a home.

I work for a vet myself so I picked her up off of the highway after she passed away and took her there. I am still waiting to see signs up about her, it has been 9 days, you would think someone would notice that their furbaby is gone.

I still cry for this beautiful girl. I did not know what to do for her, but I could not turn my back and let her be run over again as she lay there in pain and loosing her battle. I live in Texas too, and I feel the same way about all the pets that line our highways. I learned my lesson years ago, when I saw a puppy running down the street, I came home and told my husband about it and he told me that I was not bringing it to the house. The next morning when I was taking my children to school, I saw that beautiful puppy again on the side of the highway dead. My husband now knows better than to tell me "no" again.
