Submissive Urination

Submissive urination is often confused with failure of housetraining.

This behavior occurs when a subordinate normal dog urinates in the presence of a more dominate individual.

In certain pups the mere presence of the owner standing overhead elicits submissive urination, just as would the presence of an adult dog standing over the pup.

This type of urination should never be punished, as this will only aggravate the situation.

It is best to ignore the behavior and avoid situations that elicit is such as hearty greetings on arriving home.

Kneeling to interact with a very submissive dog will also help avoid the standing-above posture that is a primary stimulus for submissive urination.

With maturation most pups outgrow this type of urination providing it is not aggravated by inappropriate punishment.
