No Kill

Hi, Just wanted to let you know that I stumbled upon your website, which is very nice...great links, etc. However, I noticed that you only listed so-called "No Kill" shelters. I urge you to please look into the "no kill" movement and assess whether that is where you really want to lend your support. As a shelter employee myself, I see first hand the tragedy of animal overpopulation. My shelter is open access, we take in everything...sick, injured, old, feral, etc...the same animals that limited access "no kill" shelters often won't take, and if they do, certainly not in the volume that a municipal shelter does. The sad fact is that there are too many animals and not enough homes. The "no kill" movement is not addressing this adequately and oftentimes points the finger at and funnels resources away from municipal shelters...shelters that desperately need the funding and are working very hard to stop the killing...notably through spay/neuter programs.

Anyway, as a shelter employee who works desperately hard to save as many as I can, I would urge you to please support the open-access shelters as well as the limited-access. We are all working for the same thing and love animals as much as people in the no-kill movement. Sometimes I think we love them more...we put up with the daily pain of dealing with the REALITY of companion animal population and strive as hard as we can to place as many as we can. We do not want to kill. We desperately do not want to kill. No-kill is not resolving the basic problem...the more no-kill takes in, the more animals flood municipal shelters for euthanasia. There are a finite number of homes and too many animals...that is the basic issue. I think those in the so called no-kill movement should put more of their effort into spay/neuter assistance and incentives than in pretending that no-kill saves lives...it doesn't...it just shifts the killing to someone else.

Thanks for hearing me out. I hope you'll consider some of this and lend your support to open-access shelters too. We need it.

Laura
