Misty, a Boxer's Story

Hi, my name is Tina and I am an animal care specialist for over 20 years now. Like the owner of this site, I too live in Texas but only as a short timer as m husband is a Senior Chief in the Navy and we spent 19 of his 21 years in Va. Anyway, when we moved here we brought our rescued beagle "Beastie" with us. He was my shadow and best pal...sadly within months of our moving here Beast died of cancer.

Well, about two months after Beastie was as I call it, "set free" a friend called me and said that she had visited a trailer park nearby to see someone and noticed a brindle boxer tied to a tree in a yard on about 4 feet of rope....with a dog for sale sign on the fence...she said the dog looked miserable very skinny and dirty. Well, off I went to check it out, with my hubby in tow, and he was not crazy about the idea as he was still in deep grief over losing Beastie...well we snuck up and peeked over at her....the owners were not home so we went into the yard and looked her over....it was awful!!

She had a chain collar that was too small and literally choking her slowly, in fact it had actually sunk beneath the skin in some places! She had swollen ears from untreated infections, and was a good 10 pounds underweight, there was no food or water anywhere to be seen. My husband was not interested in actually taking her..but wanted to just call the authorities...until he knelt down in front of her and at first she cowered to the ground, but with his gentle coaxing, she crept up to him, and then placed a paw on each of his shoulders in a "boxer hug" laid her head on his shoulder and let out the saddest sweetest sigh....well that was it....we waited for the horrible people to come home....threatened them with the law and everything else we could think of...they refused to give her to us...so finally just to save her, we gave them 50 bucks and took her home with us.

I took her to the vet the next day and was told she probably wouldn't have survived another week. We also found out she had untreated and badly healed broken ribs where she had been beaten or kicked. She had also had two litters before she herself was even an adult dog! they were puppy milling her, and with her 2nd litter they thought she had been "ruined" by a stray dog, so they killed the pups and pretty much left her to die chained to that tree!

Yes, we did call the police and with the information my vet provided they were charged with abuse. The boxer Misty is now the light of our lives, at first she was scared of everyone and everything, but after of year of training, love, and careful guidance, she has turned into a friendly loving family pet and is my husbands best friend in the world. She also returned the favor of being rescued by actually rescuing an abused neighbors dog herself, by digging a hole under the fence for the starving pup to escape through..but that's another story! : ))

Signed,
Mistys' proud Mom
