"Billy!" Danny called. "I've got a double coming in. An assult or something. You take
one?"
"I certianly will."
The gurneies rolled in. Dannny took the first one. Billy started directing the second one.
"All right, let's get in curtian two, people." He got the gurney in. "Let's go."
The occupent of the gurney sat up. "Billy,,,"
He did a double take. "Diane?"
she sung her legs over the gurney. "could we lose sme of out adiuence please."
Billy was checking her pupils. "Everybody but Maggie out. Page Shutt."
"You don't need to..."
"You have a concussion. You have a bruise the size of a baseball on your cheek bone.
How's your belly?" He moved to check it.
"Fine...oww!"
"Tender." He took in the brusies that covered her arms. "Do you want to tell me what
happened?"
She mests his eyes and then quickly looked away. "An unwise relationship from the past
came back to haunt me."
"Did he?"
"No. I stopped him. That's why he's in there with Danny."
"I'm going to send you up for a ct and then we'll talk."
"Billy..."
"No argument. Look at it this way, if you tell me first, it will be easier latter with the
cops."
After Daine had been wheeled away, Billly went inot trauma two where Danny was.
"Sir, could you sit up for me?"
The man did.
"Billy?" Danny asked.
Billy slammed his hand into the guy's face.
Diane came out of the ct. "What's the verdict?" she asked.
"Some internal bleeding. How's your head?" Billy asked as he leaned over her.
"Hurts."
"It looks like you've got some bleeding intrcranally. Aaron's looking at your films now."
He reached out and smoothed her hair away from her forehead. There was an akward
moment of silence. Diane noticed his knuckles were scraped.
"What happened to your hand?"
Billy looked at her sheepishly.
"You didn't."
"I did."
"Billy!"
"Hey, it's no worse than what he already had." He touched her cheek. "Now, I'm going to
take out into surgery, ok? Then, once you're stable, we'll have that long talk, ok?"
She nodded.
Phillip hit the intercom.
"Billy."
"In a minute Phil." He addressed Aaron. "How you doing?"
"The bleeders are fixed. All I have to do is close."
"How much hair did you cut?"
Aaron looked at him quizzicly.
"She made me promise before she went under that we wouldn't cut off all of her hair."
"About 2 cm. It should be unnoticable."
"Billy." Phillip's voice was haggered.
"Tie this please," he directed a resident, "what is it Phillip?"
"Care to explain yourself?"
"Nope."
"You can't just go around punching people, sepeciallly patients!"
"I'll remember that. Snider, close. Call me when she wakes up." billy walked out of the
OR.
Phillip caught him in the hallway. "Of all people i never thought i would have to give
this lecture to you. Diane, maybe but not you."
Billy ignored him and walked off toward the locker room.
"We're not done yet!"

"Hey mom, listen to this." Emily was perched on one of the barstools in the kitchen. She
and Reed were going through medical journals for a report she was doing. "Lifestyle
factors do effect the contraction of HIV and the body's response to the drug cocktails.
Depression, isolation..." Emily stopped reading as her mother snatched the article out of
her hands," Mom!"
"...as seen in the cae of Bam-Bam, a subject of a study conducted at Chicago Hope under
Dr. Diane Grad...."
"Mom, that's you!"
"They quoted my research. They quoted my research! Billy!" she yelled intot he living
room, rushing in. "They quoted my research!"
"What?"
"The grant I lost. They quoted me on the study!"
Billy grabbed the article. "I'll be damned!" He picked her up and spun her around.
"Baby doll, that's great!"
Emily and Reed stood in the doorway of the living room, puzzled. "Mom?" Emily
asked.
Billy put down his wife who answered their daughter's question.
"Taht's mine. Bam-Bam was my test subject. The first orengetang to be succesfully
infected with AIDS."
"You gave him AIDS?" Emily asked, her eyes wide.
"Yeah," she turned back to the article, "that was my job, to kill the monkeys. Poor Bam-
Bam." She passed a hand over her eyes. "I wonder what happened to him. He was so
sick when they took him away."
"He bit you."
"Well, I infected him with AIDS. I think it's a fair trade. I mean I couldn't even give him
the meds...."Diane's voice trailed off as she wondered out of the room.
"Daddy?" Emily's face was a picture of confusition.
"I don't know baby girl. She never really talks about it anymore."
"Research?"
"Among other things." He kissed the top of his daughter's head and tossled his brother's
hair. "don't worry. She should be fine."
