Meteorologic  satellite  photos

There are two types of meteorologic satellites : geostationar and polar. The geostationar satellites are places above a certain point on equator at 36 000 km height above the surface and rotate with the Earth's rotating speed, around the rotating axe of the Earth. The polar satellites are orbiting on much lower height - 850 km. They go round the Earthe for 14 times per day.
Meteosat 7 is geostationar meteorologic satellite controlled by EUMETSAT, which include 17 European contries. It is placed above the equator and the Grinwich meridian and detects the athmospheric processes from 42% of the Earth's surface in 3 spectral channels - visual, infrared and water vapour. It makes a photo for 25 minutes by scanning 5000 lines of 5000 points of the Earth's surface. The photos are broadcasted by the satellite on every half an hour. After software decoding by different meteorological centers part of the informaton is published in Internet.
These images come from satellites which remain above a fixed point on the Earth (ie. they are "geostationary"). The infrared picture shows the same view but looking at a part of the spectrum which our eyes do not detect. The infrared pictures allow us to measure the temperature of the cloud tops, which can be used to determine their height. The whiter clouds are colder than the greyer clouds in this image. Infrared images can be recorded 24 hours a day. Visible pictures can only be made during daylight hours. Coast-lines and lines of latitude and longitude have been added to the images and they have been altered to northern polar stereographic projection. These images are in JPEG format and occupy about 75 KBytes. The Infrared images should be updated with the 00:00, 06:00, 12:00 and 18:00 GMT pictures. It usually takes about 1hr 30 min. for these images to be processed and be updated on the website.
