Callom Andrew MacLaren

Age: 14 earth years

Planet of Origin: Earth, Solar System

Height: 5' 6"

Race/Ethnicity: Presumed Scottish/Mediterranean hybrid.

Weight: 140 lbs. On Earth

Hair: Dirty Blonde, straight and thick

Eyes: Hazel

Skin: Olive complexion, tans easily. A few freckles on his cheeks and here and there on his body.

Known Relatives: Uncle Andrew Stewart MacLaren, Aunt Bridget Lindsay MacLaren, Adopted father Sir Donald MacLaren. His biological parents are unknown at this time. Considers Rayna Vitreum a close personal friend, and a mother figure.

Appearance: Slender with not a lot of body mass at this point. Pleasant features, slightly hawkish nose, typical of a Scott. Face is oval, but still rounded with youth. Expected to have more prominent chin and features altering later. Hands are long and delicate, the hands of an artist. Wears a red and green Kilt of MacLaren tartan, with button up shirts and wool pullovers that match. Wears argyle or gray socks and Doc Martin shoes.

Abilities: Callom is an ESPER, with the ability to teleport, and project mental images. His control of both abilities is limited by his inexperience. However, he is quickly learning the use of his powers through his affiliations with his uncle, Andrew MacLaren.

Callom has recently awakened to his full teleportational abilities, which he can only perform four times in an hour without exhaustion. The mental projection is much less taxing, for he can perform it repeatedly. He is able to tune into the sensory cortex of humanoid brains, creating visual and audio illusions of his choice. The result is an image that the subject perceives, that isnt really there. Also, he can widen this ability to produce an actual astral image. Yet this astral projection is extremely draining to Callom.

He is an accomplished violinist and singer, and well-schooled in Scottish history. He has a voracious appetite for learning archaeology, reading much about ancient civilizations, particularly ancient Egypt. Somehow he feels a connection with that particular ancient culture. Little does he suspect why!

Armor: None known

Weapons: Callom in his travels through space and Time with the Doctor and Rayna Vitreum (the time lady version) have taught him many odd abilities. One of them was the use of a cutlass, or small short sword. When he was marooned for a year in 1745, he learned to sword fight and throw small daggers, called skeindus. He carries a skeindu in his sock, like many a Scotsman. He can throw it with deadly accuracy. Also, he has learned how to make nitroglycerin explosives from Ace, the teenage companion of the Doctor. Also on his travels he has learned how to fire a number of ancient and modern guns, including crossbows, flintlocks, and laser pistols. However, he will not kill unless absolutely necessary.

Languages: He can speak English, Gaelic and French fluently. He knows a smattering of Hexadecimal, Trynia's native language, and some Genomyni, the language of the humans of Mantissa. Also, he has taught himself how to read some hieroglyphics in his spare time.

Personality: Outgoing and charming, Callom is known to make new friends quickly from his gift of gab and boyish smile. He is very trusting outwardly, but his psychic powers include a bit of intuition that gives him an edge. He is clever to a fault, and mischievous, prone to using his power to play a prank on an unsuspecting friend. Yet he is loyal and trustworthy.

Weaknesses: Callom's innocence and trusting often get him into trouble. He has learned early in life there are just some you cannot trust. But that does not stop him from trying to see the good in everyone he encounters. Also, his teleportation power is limited to places he has seen, or thoughts to home in on. There is a risk if he teleports blind of him materializing in a solid object. His mental projection is tiring if he attempts it more than five times in one day. The teleportation is limited to twenty short hops per day, (less than five hundred feet) and five hops of more than one mile. As he ages this ability will increase. He is not physically stronger than the average boy his age is.

Background: Growing up in a small Scottish town might seem picturesque and pleasant to most. Yet Callom's childhood is fraught with frustration due to the fact that his family, all save his adopted father, Sir Donald MacLaren, possess psychic powers. And none of them can share these abilities with the outside world, for fear of having these powers exploited. The ancient blood of the townspeople is rumored to have been influenced by the little folk. While this is superstition, Callom takes it very seriously.

Growing up he had the power to create illusions, making his adopted father think that the family manor was haunted. Little by little, and with his Uncle Andrew (a telepath) help, he discovered his powers. And realized they were not madness or witchcraft, but real abilities. However, these powers were kept a close secret from Donald, who was psi null, and distrusted telepaths, saying they were evil. Donald's knighthood and influence in the Scottish Parliament dissuade Andrew from interfering in this arrangement.

The appearance of several scientists from a parapsychology institute created concern for Andrew MacLaren. For if the secret of the town ever was discovered, they could all kiss their quiet lives goodbye. Only Donald MacLaren was eager to have these scientists investigate the cause of the haunting. One scientist, a Ms Fiona Vitreum, was intrigued by the boys powers. And quickly connected with the young boy.

However, one night Fiona happened upon the boy, and took him with her for a trip. It turned out that Fiona was in reality a Genomyn of Mantissa, a society devoted to studying alien life forms. Two other children, a Chinese psychic and a cockney psychic were here subjects. And they were instantly taken to a menagerie run by a Time Lady Scientist, called only the Rani.

However when she studied these humans, Fiona became sympathetic, and even connected on a psychic level with the children. Through their constant dialogues she realized she was wrong in her study of sentient telepaths. She agreed to help them escape, and stole a TARDIS from the Ranee. After harrowing adventures, she managed to return the children home. Leaving her with Callom. Yet Callom did not wish to leave her side. For he had developed a close bond with the lonely scientist. He wondered if she could find who his real parents were. But this was not to last. The Ranee, having tracked her former lab assistant, swore revenge. Fiona activated Callom's latent teleportational ability, sending him into the Vortex. There he drifted, till the Seventh Doctor and Ace materialized, tracing his thoughts through the Doctors TARDIS telepathic circuits. Befriending them, he told them of the Ranees latest plot. The story of this encounter will be told in the story Castaway in Time and Space.

After helping them escape the Ranee, Fiona Vitreum perished in radiation poisoning. The Doctor used the Ranees gene technology to infuse his own regenerative DNA sequences into her to push her to regenerate. The result was a new incarnation, which eventually called herself Trynia Merin then later Rayna Vitreum. Far different from her former self, this new organism quickly took to Callom as a protective parent. The Doctor charged Callom with keeping the source of the DNA a secret. When asking the Doctor, he claimed it was the Ranee's experiments that rendered Rayna to regenerate.

They had a series of adventures, which are told in the fanfictions Growing Madness, and Certain Reservations. But eventually Trynia discovered the Doctors deceit. Unable to trust the time traveler, she left him to continue on her own journey with Callom. They managed to return Callom to his own time and place in Scotland. Rayna ended up being stuck in the Doctors past when a time storm stranded her during the time of the Doctors exile, told in the fanfiction A Geological Conundrum.

Callom continued to wonder about his parents origins. He wished he could contact Rayna again. During a training session with his uncle in the use of his powers, they accidentally made mental contact with a Fiona Vitreum. But this was not the Fiona Vitreum he had known. But one from an alternate future where Mantissa was being ruled by the Androni, a series of scientists who had placed their consciousness in android shells. They were pioneering time travel, and Fiona had stumbled onto Callom's astral projections. Callom's ability to teleport was triggered and he ended up on Mantissa.

This was a shock, for he recognized Fiona, who did not know him. And it dawned on him that he was in an alternate future. Where Earth was considered a backward world and scientists of Mantissa captured other life forms from their native habitats with time space machines. And Fiona was the inventor.

He tried to convince Fiona her time experiments were wrong. Fiona did not want to believe him at first. But when a time experiment she performed killed her lab technician, she began to question her ethics. And those of her masters. She and several other scientists who were studying alien races began to realize that humans were not so primitive as they had thought. A supercomputer called VAX Matrix was being developed to run the planets ever increasing amount of robotic servo units. Callom's abilities to project mental images made him a popular attraction with the other scientists, and his ability to teleport was intriguing to them. They soon evaluated that he was most advanced for a human. But the Andron rulers did not like this research at all.

It turned out that Callom had come in the midst of a strange sickness that was killing the Genomyni, the humanoids of this world. And that is why the Andron developed the process of mind transfer into android bodies. However the Genomyni of this world did not wish to undergo this process. But there were few left, and those that refused were left to die, or deep-frozen. When Fiona discovered the reality behind this, she had a nervous breakdown. Going mad, she set her time experiment on VAX Matrix, thinking it the source of the Andron's power. It exploded, killing many of the remaining humans, and disabling thousands of Androns.

Callom teleported to the safety of a lab during the explosion. The Mechnatech servos kept him and Rhanalda, Fiona's boss safe. They moved to save whom they could, putting them into cryosleep with the Mechnatechs help. For the Mechnatecs unlike the Androns, were programmed with Asimov's three laws. To save humans and sentient life.

Fiona was found by a Mechnatec, barely alive. They took what they could from her, DNA samples. VAX Matrix then set out to rebuilt the Androns, and tries and saves the human populace. But many had been rendered sterile by the explosion of time. There was no way save cloning to reproduce. Thus VAX Matrix invented a new life form, Cybernami. The remaining humans were augmented with cybernetics to bypass and save their lives with nanotechnology. However they could not sexually reproduce. Without new genetic material, the humanoid side could not hope to flourish.

Callom volunteered to give a sample of his DNA to help. As the only fertile male, even though he was young, he was seen as a source of material. Fiona's body was seen to be the last repository of ova cells. With some sperm samples from Callom, and those of Fiona's eggs, a whole host of embryos were created. Several were cloned from the frozen scientists, from which sperm and egg samples could be created. And saved in a Race bank for future genetic material. In return, Callom was returned to his own time and place, his memory of the events blocked till the proper time.

The first generation of Cybernami became the servile class to the Andron, who were now fully functional. Fiona was seen to be a hero to some, and a villain to others. Several of the embryos were combined with nanites, and allowed to incubate. Thus the first generation of reproduced Cybernami was spawned. The frozen scientists genetic material was combined with that of others to create quite a diversity.

And the alternate had come full circle. When Callom returned home, he participated in a student exchange program, and stayed with a host family in San Francisco, the Lu's.

The best friend of Walter Lu was Presley Carnarvon. And Callom began to suspect something was awfully strange about this boy who was followed by a bandaged cat and strange figures in bandages. And mentions of a Trynia piqued his interest. Plus his psychic powers, still fully operational detected a strong psychic mind nearby.

The mind of Princess Sohkarra. And when Callom met the Princess, a whole chapter in his life started that was just as intriguing as his time with Rayna, the Mantissan. For a Trynia Merin did exist on his world, but she was a cyborg!!!! And the secret to his parents would soon become very painfully clear... very soon.

Relationships to Mummies:

Presley Carnarvon: Got to know Presley as he was staying with Walter Lu as a host family. Since Presley hung with Walter as a best friend, Callom got to know Presley, and observed the strange habits this boy exhibited. Since Egyptology was Callom's hobby, he paid close attention to the Egyptian amulet Presley wears. And he observed the Mummies coming to Presley's rescue at one point! When they were alone, and Shabti attacked, Callom revealed his powers to Presley by teleporting him to safety. Both boys now know of the other's secrets. But both are beginning to trust each other and have no idea of the enormity of their secrets!

Sohkarra: Shares a strange mental rapport with Callom. The reason will become apparent in an upcoming Fanfiction. Now that Callom knows the Mummies exist, Sohkarra is training Callom how to better use his psychic gifts. She senses something familiar about this boy who is only two years older then Presley. And he would trust her with his very existence.

JaKal: Unsure of what to make of this boy. While he is glad that Presley has a new friend, he is wary of Callom. Till he earns JaKal's trust, there is an unease. But he realizes Sohkarra trusts Callom, and her judgment is almost infallible.

Rath: Impressed with Callom's latent psychic ability. And his knowledge of Egyptian history. At Presley's insistence he teaches Callom more about reading hieroglyphics. Rath suspects that there is some great secret Callom hides, and endeavors to use mystical means to determine it.

Armon: Since Callom is funloving and a teenage boy, these two get along well. Armon and Presley have someone else to shoot hoops with or take to movies. Armon trusts Callom, for Callom's knowledge of self defense impresses the Warrior. He senses Callom's innocence and innate goodness.

Nefertina: Enjoys Callom's mischievous nature, and sometimes gangs up with him to play tricks on Rath. Callom has a crush on Nefer-Tina, for she is very much like the Doctor's friend Ace, whom he was attracted to in his Time space travels.

Trynia Merin: Naturally since Callom knew Rayna also as Trynia in another time line, he assumes Trynia is his friend. But this universes' version of Trynia is not the gentle planetary geologist he is familiar with. In fact the alien cyborg is the exact opposite of Callom's beloved friend. In the fact that the Trynia he knew loved nature, and considered technology a necessary evil. Seeing a cyborg version of his friend is painful, yet Callom accepts this. Trynia is intrigued at the existence of an alternate universe version of herself as a humanoid devoid of cybernetics.

Marianne Ellis: Feels affection for this boy. He reminds her of some relatives she has in Scotland. Callom has a strange feeling of deja vu about her, but cannot understand why. This connection will be revealed in an upcoming fanfiction. For now, since Marianne is a friend of the Mummies, Callom is just getting to know her.

Nyx Riven: Admires Callom's spunk, but gets tired of his pranks. She wishes he'd get a life and loose the kilt and stop hagning with Walter. Secretly she's jealous of his psychic abilities to create illusions and teleport. But she would defend him all the same as he would her. They argue like a brother and sister.

Callom Andrew MacLaren is property of Me, Trynia Merin. He is my unique creation, around since 1987, and is one of my oldest fancharacters. If you wish to use him for a fanfic, please ask permission. Thanks!
