The Baalbek Awareness Page

The Romans built these temple ruins on the Grand Terrace, right above the Trillithon. They built the temples in honor of their Gods. The Temple of Venus, in the background, is almost completely intact. Unfortunately, only the columns from the Temple of Jupiter remain. These six columns, however, are among the tallest in the world, rising about 60' over the platform floor.

One may be inclined to ask... What motivated the Romans to build such extraordinary temples on the opposite side of the Mediterranian Sea, almost 600 miles from Rome? Is it possible that they really believed in the "mythology" of ancient times? And most important... Why is Baalbek overlooked by the majority of Archaeology, Art History, and World History courses in American Universities?
