Basenji's that were adopted or put to sleep due to temperament
Abby Abby was a petite little red and white 1-year-old female Basenji.  A private shelter near Cincinnati contacted me to come get her.  Her story was 5 homes in 3 years. and shots at every new home.  I contacted her breeder near Cincinnati and they told me they were coming to pick her up and never did, After three (3) phone calls to them I decided that they were not gig to get her so rescue placed her. She was so sweet and playful. She was placed with a family of four (4) and at last they were living in northern Ohio near Toledo.  Abby was placed a few years ago but I had misplaced her info and just now remembered her. Updated 8-19-2000
Alex Alex is a 1 1/2 yr. old black and white female. Her owner said that she did not get along with her lab that she brought into the hose. Alex is sister of Topaz (rescue) and Joee. (Rescue) She was mated with Ozzie and produced Johan (another rescue) She was adopt in 1992 and living in Lexington, Kentucky.
Alex (2) Alex 2 was given up to rescue with her brother Beau at 6 years of age. They were both kept outside all year long. They came from Louisville, Kentucky. The owners had lost their business and had to move to an apartment. She is no living in Chicago. She was adopted as a replacement of another basenji that passed on and the owner's other basenji was grieving for the loss of its mate. Since then her brother Beau has joined Alex. They are treated like royalty with plush beds, heavy sweaters etc. The owner sends me pictures and even the 'Second Hand Basenji ' book.
Alexei -4 month red/white male  puppy with black color

Status: Adoption Pending

Picture 1
Picture 2

He is a 4-month-old red and white female Basenji he has not been socialized much but is very sweet. A person who was breeding basenjis and is getting out of the business gave him up. He and 8 other puppies were on their way to the animal helter. At this point we need to complete the shots and test and then neuter him before he can be placed. Updated 01-04-2003. He is very friendly and outgoing but sometimes leery of those he does not know. He does well in the crate and is not leashed trained. He has had his first set of puppy shots. He is easy to handle. He is in the process of being dewormed. He is trying to cope with the basement stairs when trying to go outside but not quite sure how to handle them. We are working on that. He will have his neutering as soon as he is clean of worms.  He is doing fine. He is scheduled to be neutered on 2/5/04. He can climb the basement stairs with ease. He is friendly towards me but like the rest are very aloft as if no socialization has ever taken place. He warms ups quickly. I can pick her up with no problem and she has a good appetite. I am working on him jumping into the crate when they come in by placing food inside. This will help him think of the crate as a happy place and not just something to be thrown into.  He will be available for adoption 10-14 days past her neuter surgery (weekend of 2/20/2004. He has been de-wormed and will be starting on Heartguard heartworm prevention medicine..  Updated 1/22/2004. Alexei was adopted on 2/14/2004 and is living with a family in Kentucky. Updated 2/16/2004.
Arleigh (pronounced "Arlee")

Status: Adopted

Arleigh is a 1.5 year old red and white male Basenji. He is neutered and up to date on vaccinations. He arrived just today from the south.  He weighs about 21 pounds. He is both house trained and crate trained (he does not like the crate but he is ok with it). reason for putting into rescue is the family moved into an apartment and just had a baby. the dog gets along with children (do not know about cats). My first impression was a good dog. He let me pick him up and hold him in my lap belly up on his back. He was a little stupidities as to who I was and why I did this but he let me do it anyway. The photos are just a first day pictures. He was a little nervous during the session. At this time I see no problems with him. Updated 6-19-2004. He is a very sweet dog and well trained in the house. He is playful and gentle with everyone. He cries in the crate when first put into it and if he has to go to the bathroom. Update 6-30-2004. Arleigh was adopted on 1-10-2004.
Bandit Bandit is a 9 month old black and white male Basenji. He was purchased in a pet store in Beavercreek, Ohio for $850. He was turned over to rescue at age 12 weeks when the boyfriend and girlfriend broke up. the girlfriend could not keep dog at her apartment and the boyfriend thought it not best to keep the dog since he was gone a lot.  He came with kennel cough. He was a very small male probably the runt of the litter.  He was such a good boy in his crate and on walks. After 5 or 6 different  antibiotics, his kennel cough went away.  He developed some other minor health issues , but we dealt with them and then we had him neutered. Taylor taught him to yodel and he makes happy yodel sounds a lot.  He is currently scheduled to leave for Pennsylvania on the weekend of the 29th of Sept. If the adoption falls through, then he will be put back up for adoption Updated 9-24-2001
B.G.(Big Guy) B.G. was found running loose in Englewood, Ohio. He was approx. 15 yr. old when found and had a heart murmur. He was a very gentle dog, but on occasion would become a fear bitter when no fore warning. He had to be pit to sleep as he was unreliable as a placement. We spent several months trying to find his owners and also trying to re-train him.
BJ BJ was a 1.5 year old red & white female basenji. She was turned into the vet to be put down for biting. The vet called Basenji Education And Rescue to help in the situation. She was evaluated for several weeks. She did fine with men but women made her fearful. I had a woman (who knew Basenji's very well) watch my dogs while I was on vacation for the weekend. The dog attacked her for no reason as she was putting her in the crate. I had done it several times without a problem. BJ not only tried once , but came back after the woman to attack. We felt that she would not be suitable form placement. She had her second chance and messed it up. She was put to sleep in late April-99. Updated: 4-99
Beau (Old Beau)

(click here for a picture of Old Beau after his hip replacement)

Beau was given up to rescue with his sister Alex 2 at 6 years of age .. They were both kept outside all year long. They came from Louisville, Kentucky. The owners had lost their business and had to move to an apartment. He was adopted as a replacement of another basenji that passed on and the owner's other basenji which was ALEX 2 who was grieving a bit. for the loss of its mate. Beau and Alex 2 has been joined together and are now living in Chicago together. They are treated like royalty with plush beds, heavy sweaters etc. The owner sends me pictures and even the 'Second Hand Basenji ' book. Update: 8/24/99- Beau is on thyroid and he now has just had a hip replacement. He will have a 6 week recovery , but he is doing fine.
Ben Ben came from Columbus, OH. animal shelter. He is a 2 year old red and white neutered male Basenji. He is very energetic and loving. He was crate trained and housebroken. He is living back in Columbus, Oh with a family
Ben #2 He was turned into the shelter in Columbus because the owner was moving and could not take him. We feel that he is the brother of Gretta. They were both adopted from the same shelter at the same time. Ben #2 is currently adopted and living with my Brother and his family. Updated 11/9/99
BENNIE Bennie came from Columbus, Ohio He was placed in rescue after several members of his human family had perished in a house fire. The remaining members had to move in with other family members, but Bennie could not adjust. They kept him in the shed because he screamed if he was locked up. That was probably due to being traumatized from the fire. He was going to the shelter when the owner noticed a person wearing a basenji T-shirt at the supermarket. That person informed them of rescue. He was adopted 1 year later. The new owner waited 5 months for him. I wanted to get him calmed down and the new owner was trying to find a place to live where she could have a dog. He lived very happy and spoiled for two years until he was killed by a car.
Benny VI Benny is a 4.5  yr old (dob- 12-21-97) red and white male Basenji. He was given up for adoption on 4-13-2001 (Friday the 13th) in order to start his new life. He seems very sweet. He does well in a crate except that he does the yodel a little. He was not crated a lot.  He does not like to be in the backyard for any long period of time. He was originally purchased at Petland  He did well when introduced to Kramer and duke. He will be ready for adoption around 6-1-2001. Updated 4-15-2001. Benny was adopted on Labor Day Weekend. He is living happily in Georgia. He immediately took to them as they walk ed in the front door and sat on their lap. It was if they were meant for each other.  Updated 9-7-2001.
Blaze Blaze is a 6 year old red and white female. rescued from a Bowling Green Ohio shelter turned  in by a family who was moving and did not want to take her. She is coming along nicely. She does well in a crate. She was turned in with Rocky. she will be ready for adoption around the end of the month of July . Updated 7-4-2000 . She is doing well , she is crated with Rock. She eats well and eats anything put in front of her so far. She goes into the crate quite well. Updated 11-13-2000. Blaze has gone t oher new owner near where she started from. She is living in Toledo Ohio Updated: 1-27-2001
Bunji Bunji was purchased in a pet store. He was placed into rescue at 1 year of age. The former owners were never told (educated) by the pet store about a basenji's character and behavior.. The basenji was kept locked in the bathroom whenever they went away. It would tear up anything it could. He was never crate trained. He is now living with several other basenji's in Canada and very happy.
Brea Brea was turned into rescue by a veterinary office who was getting ready to put her down per the owners request. I went and got her and she was nervous but ok. She was a good little girl, but would be aggressive toward female humans. It was agreed by the rescue committee to put her down. She was untrustworthy with strangers. I worked with her for 4 months with no change. She was put to sleep
Cairo Cairo was a red and white female placed in rescue age 7. The family was going through a divorce and neither wanted the dog. She was a fear biter. She learned that if she growled (or even snapped/bite) that she would get her own way. She spent several months in re-training but did not show signs of changing. It was determined that she could not be placed (trustworthy) into a new home and no other suitable option was available. She was put to sleep.
Casey Casey is an 11 year old Basenji that has a history of biting the owner and probably never was trained to listen to the owned "NO". He does not submit to authority at all. The associated picture  is just one of many times he has turned on me. He is getting better, but will never be trustworthy enough to be adopted. Although he has never bitten me, he is doing a good job at making me think he will.  Please look at this picture and remind yourself that some Basenji's turn out BAD whether it be abused, untrained or  the human owner never  took charge  of the situation.. I am not saying that your basenji will turn out this way, but take it from someone who has been bitten almost everywhere on his body (yes including the crotch). This means not letting them get away with growling at you for kicking them off the couch. He will be put down soon. I have had him in rescue for nearly 8 weeks. I have had several B's over the years like him. I also wanted to remind B owners that  there are a lot of GOOD dogs out there (both rescues and ones from breeders), but there are still certain BAD dogs to.  The BAD dog could be a result of either a mental or physical injury. Updated 2/28/2000
Cassidy Cassidy is a Shiba Inu rescue from a Shelbyville Indiana shelter(they told us that he was a Basenji). We think he is about 1.5 yrs old. He has a injury to his left front leg with some crushed bones (I have the x-ray). I took him to my vet (who also owns Basenjis) and got all his shot including rabies, parvo distemper etc. He is heartworm negative and has hookworms which I am treating. He is very loving and did get a little snippy at the vets (can you blame him ). He visited the vet in Indiana to get checked out and get a splint on his leg. He will need to have the splint on for about 10 weeks ( it has been about 2.5 weeks now. I am trying to find someone in Shiba Inu rescue or someone that has Shiba Inu's to adopt this dog . Basenji does have about $300 in vet bills so far. There des not seem to be any need for surgery at this time. He will always have a limp, so I am told. Updated: 6-2000. Cassidy was put to sleep. His injury was too severe and his temperment was very aggressive towards other people (he accepted me with open paws. The knjury to his leg had turnbed into gnagrene and we decide that the leg could not be saved. The Shiba rescue people were consulted and also met him as weel before any deciscion was made. Cassidy was my first Shiba Inu and he will be sorely missed, even though I had him such a short time. Update: 7-2000
Catia Catia was 39 pound tri color female placed into rescue at age 4. . Her owners were being relocated for their jobs and could not take her with them. She was trimmed down to 19 pounds ( a whole basenji) and is living in Ohio with a mother and single child home. They also have one other dog (mixed breed) which they get along with fine.
Chaco Chaco was a red and white male placed into rescue at age 6 and after his owner could not take his temperament problem. She was his second owner. His first owners accidentally ran over him with their car when backing up from their driveway. He lost his leg after they had a friend put a cast on it. The dog chewed the cast off and it became infected, so it was removed. He stayed in rescue for about 2 1/2 years until his temperament proved too undesirable. The dog was put to sleep.
Champ Champ is a 9 month old red and white male Basenji. He and Lady were purchased from a backyard breeder who told them that these were outdoor dogs year round.  He needs some work on his leash as he was never trained on a leash. He does well in a crate, but he stays in there with his sister Lady.  He is really shy and it is taking time to get to know him. He needs some confidence. He is sweet but unsure of those he does not know. He is a puppy. He will be updated on shots and neutered before he is adopted.Updated 8-18-2001. Champ has been adopted. Updated 12-20-2001
Chisum Chisum is a 3.5 year old red & white male neutered Basenji. He is sweet. He is not fully crate trained ,at this time, but in one week he has made some significant progress. He is on a lamb and rice dog food as chicken is a problem in his diet (per the former owner). . He and Jesse came in together. They were both owned by a person who was getting ready to deploy in the military. Updated 10-11-2000. After further evaluation, he shows no real emotions except that he perks up at treats, he yodels to come in if left out too long , but does not want to come in. He does not show his affection very well, but he his a couch potato. He looks at you with big soft eyes ands can not love him. He supposedly came from a puppy mill . This Basenji would do well in some one who does not want a very active Basenji. Do not get me wrong, He does get into things like a Basenji would. He was born on3-19-2000.. Chisum is not usually crate anymore while I am gone because  he is so upset about it and I have not been able to get his anxiety level down. Since he is not destructive, I have tried to let him stay in the living room uncrated while I am gone  as an experiment Updated 11-13-2000. Chisum looks like he will be adopted on 3/24/2001. He is moving to Michigan. I will leave this posting on the adoption center in case it does not work out. Updated 3-9-2001. Chisum is now living in Michigan. Updated 4-12-2001
Cincy Cincy is a 1 yr old red and white male neutered  Basenji. I was told he was 7 months old (he is starting to act like it) , but reserve my judgment on this. He was turned into a Cincinnati animal shelter by a puppy broker who could not sell him because he was probably too old. This is the story told to me. He is good in a travel type (Vari Kennel) and  I am working on the wire crate  situation. He cries in the wire crate. He was easy to give a bath with only minor typical "I do not need or want a bath human). Cincy knows how to jump on the couch after a bath and rub all over it "Basenji style".  He loves to play and I can take a bone away from with no problem. He walks gently on the leash. He wil be getting all shots and test on Tuesday 6-18-2002.  Updated : 6-14-2002. He is now yodeling. I have placed him with various other B's and he seems good with them after the pecking order was established.   Updated 7-3-2002. Cincy is living in cincinatti now. Updated 7-12-2002.Cincy has been returned to rescue.  It was no fault of the Basenji himself.  B.E.A.R decided to retrieve the Basenji after several failed attempts to call and email the owner for follow-up on the rescue basenji.  the owner also stated that 2 dogs in the house was too much for his family. Cincy seems ok. He is a lot skinnier (ribs showing , but ok. He is running with 3 of my Basenjis in the backyard. I am currently accepting applications (email me for an application). He is house  and crate trained. He is neutered and has all his shots up to date.   Update 9-21-2002 Cincy is now living in the Dayton area with a family of Four. |Updated 10-26-2002.

CJ (short for "Captain Jack Sparrow") is a red and white male Basenji. He was born on 12/27/03 so he is about 1.5 years old. He was purchased at a pet store for an ungodly amount. He is pretty much from a puppy mill so papers do not really mean a thing. He is very friendly, wags his tail. he is very aloft at first but within 30 seconds of me doing play bows with him he was playing. He is crate trained but does cry at first when he goes in but not always. He is very skinny due to the food he was on. He is currently being fed Eukanuba performance formula which should help him gain weight . He gets along with my Basenji (male 14 years old). I gave him a bath and he did quite well temperament wise as he cried one time but never tried to bite me at all. He does know sit and we are working on lay down and other obedience  objectives. I am not sure how he does around children. We have had him since Sunday (04-03-2005). We have a pre surgery check for his neutering on Friday (04-08-2005) and will be scheduling his neutering after that. Also since the vet is a Basenji person and her assistant then some additional "eyes" will be checking on him as in relation to his temperament.  He needs to be neutered and some more evaluation before we can adopt him out. We are currently taking applications if you have not already submitted an application for adoption of a BEAR Basenji.  Updated 04-05-2005. Cj has been here a week now and is a very playful and active Basenji. He visited the vet on Friday  (who is a basenji owner herself) and he did quite well. He traveled in the crate in the car nicely. He is doing very good in his crate (never has messed in his crate. He gets excited on the way out to go to the bathroom  and sometimes will :leak" on the floor as he is going outside. As he becomes more familiar with the schedule and other dogs etc , I think this will go away. He is schedule for his neutering on Tuesday. Update 04-09-2005. CJ is doing great. He has all of his vaccines completed and has been neutered for a week now. He is recovering nicely. He does yodel and bark. He plays with my other dogs and is very friendly to all. He did well in his vet visits and took the shots very well. I will be taking him to get his staples out this week and will be available for adoption by next weekend )4/22/2005 Friday). Update 04-15-2005. CJ is still available. We are looking for the best home for him. he lots of energy , but very loving.  I have posted some new pictures of him . He does well in the crate. Update 6-14-2005. Cj has been adopted Updated 7-14-2005
Claire Claire is a 3 yer old red & white female (soon to be spayed ) female Basenji. She is very calm when walking on lead. She is up to date on all shots (rabies, parvo, dhllp, bordatella and her urine, fecal and heartworm exams. All are now negative , but she did have worms originally. She was acquired on  n 9-25-00 and her akc name is Clara Effina (born (12/29/97). . Claire is Pokie's Mom.. She was originally from a breeder (in Indiana) who was to turn him and 4 other B's into rescue for placement. The night before pickup they disappeared and the breeder would not disclose their whereabouts. This was in May of 2000, but in September of 2000 I was notified that they were living just 12 miles from my house on a resuce ranch with a zebra, a kangaroo, lots of dogs and a 2600 pound draft horse. . Claire is living in Maryland and the owner reported that he took Claire for a nice walk along the Potomic river and she follows him around alot. She is living with 2 human adults and a cat. She was adopted on 11-03-2000. Updated 11-06-2000
Cleo Cleo was flown from Pittsburgh, Pa after a conversation with a friend of the owner. The owner was dying and they needed to find a home that would take the Basenji. She was 6.5 years old. She arrived in August by plane. I kept her until February. I She had bitten me numerous times, but I kept giving her a chance. The last time she bit me, we were lure coursing in Georgia when the camper door bump her chin. She did not bit right away, but waited until I picked her up. Fourteen puncture wounds in my arm later and her coming back at me, I made the decision to put her to sleep. I felt she was not trustworthy in another persons hands. She was very good and then the next minute she was aggressive.
Corky He is a 10-12 year old red & white male. He was placed in a home in Cincinnati by another rescue organization (later replaced by Katema). He was originally described as a 3-7 year old dog by the other rescue person . He was much older per his condition and teeth. He was found as a stray in North Carolina. Besides his age, he has a neck injury and a dislocated shoulder (non-fixable, it has been that way too long). We had a sports medicine specialists look at him and it turns out to be a torn ligament in his left front shoulder. He was placed with a person that never had a dog let alone a basenji. I am starting him on Thyroid this week and feeding him vitamins. He is only going to be adopted to a basenji person that will understand a real old dog. He is going to stay with me. He shows no emotions and has seizures about 1-2 a month in which he pees on himself. . (8/30/99). Updated: (2/28/2000_ We took Corky to Ohio State University Vet Hospital. He was diagnosed with unknown origins of seizures. They said it could be a brain (or other) tumor or a metabolic cause or something else unknown. They could tell more with a CATscan. He will still stay with me
Dazzle Dazzle is a 2 year old Brindle colored female basenji.   She was rescued from a puppy mill auction in March 13 in Missouri. Two other Basenjis came with her (Groucho and Nora) She had puppies recently as she still has milk in her. It appears that she has had little or no human contact. She knows no commands or words such has "good girl" etc  and cringes or hides from any human. The 3 Basenji's are starting to loosen up in the backyard as they are moving a little more freely when I am not around.  I am actually starting to get them to go back in the house by herding them toward the door. It is hard to imagination that someone could treat the dogs like this.  She has visited the vet and is negative on fecal, urine and heartworm and has been updated on all her shots. I will start to to introduce her to other Basenji's here to get her to know it is ok  and to help build her confidence level. It will be a few weeks at least before she even starts to come out of her shell. She is not currently available for adoption as she needs to complete her evaluation period and retraining. Please do not apply for her yet as I am not sure what kind of Basenji she will turn out to be and how long it will take to evaluate and retrain her. Updated 3-15-2001.  Dazzle was adopted to a family in West Virginia.  . Updated 9-22-2001.
Dewey Dewey is a 1.5 year old R&W male. At this point he is not neutered , but will be soon. He was turned into rescue  because his owner was in a accident and can not take care of him. The owner is on Oxygen and the dog is a little too much for him to handle. He did not like the crate but settled down after awhile. He just arrived tonight and I will start him running with the other rescues as soon as he is neutered.  Approx adoption time frame is at least  Mid-August Temperament seems good but will continue testing. Updated 7-4-2000
Duke Duke is a 2.5 year old red & white male. The owners could not deal with him and his "basenji characteristics" any longer (chewing etc). They have no fenced yard for him to play with. He was from a breeder (the same one that Sawyer and Dewey came from).  He needs to be neutered and he will be here for a 6-8 week evaluation period as usual. Duke has been neutered for a week and is doing great. He is well crate trained and has gotten along with several other Basenji's that I have placed him with in the backyard. We did have a dewclaw removed since one had grown back. Duke was adopted on 11-03-2000 and is living with a family of 2 adilts and a 2yr old Brindle male in Cincinnati, Ohio. They play alot and the new owners stated that he is very mellow.. Updated 11-06-2000

Duke has been adopted and is now living happuly in Maryland with an older couple, a dachshund and some talking birds. 10-9-2001

Garth Garth was a big red and white male approximately 3 years old from Tennessee. He loved to yodel. He was brought to rescue because his family did not have the time form him anymore. He is living in Kettering , Ohio with his new family
Eschu Eschu was6 year old red and white male turned in because he did not get along with children. He was very overweight and friendly. He was a bit dog aggressive at others but learned to like them quickly. He lost about 8 pounds and looked good. He spent a great deal of time with me (I loved him) and was crate trained right away. He would spin in his crate whenever other B's ran around. He is now a KY2 Basenji (living in Kentucky with hi new owner.
Ellie Ellie is a 1 year old  red and white female Basenji.  she was turned over to a police officer in Ohio and he gave her to rescue. she is sweet and petite. she settles in the crate  easily. the person who turned her over to rescue had her for about 2 weeks and he said that she was gentle with his small child. At the present time she is not spayed and we will be taking her to the vet (dr. Tracy Leonard DVM) for spaying and all vaccinations. If you want more information about her please click here. Click on her name to see her pictures taken when she arrived at B.E.A.R.. Updated 3-8-2003.   Ellie weighed in at 16 pounds and she is very skinny and needs  some  more weight on her. Her fecal was negative and so was the heartworm test.  she did pretty well during the vaccinations. .  she is up to date on her shots now. I will be scheduling a spay surgery  within a week. She has a good temperament when others have come to visit. she is not a picky eater and eat everything I have fed her.  Updated 3/23/2003. She was spayed and recovered very well. Updated 3-27-2003.  Ellie has been adopted and is living in Indiana with a fine family of four. Updated 4-11-2003.
Ellie Mae Ellie Mae is a 1 year (born 11-24-1999) old black and white female. She was given up because the wife was not happy with her and thought that since her "hackles" were up that she was not pleased with her. . She had a hip injury when she was a puppy and had her "ball " of the hip  socket removed. She is doing fine and one can not notice it unless you do an x=ray of the hip.  The  muscles help to hold the leg in place (almost like a sling). She does not limp or anything like that. She is very sweet and loves to kiss and clean out my ears (she sneaks up on me when sleeping to does   this). She is now living in Cleveland with a couple that had a Basenji that died of Fanconi.  She is crate trained and housebroken. Updated 3-9-2001
Elvis Elvis is a 2 year old red and white male basenji. He is very sweet and he has gotten along with several different Basenji's that he has been put with.  The one drawback is with children. I think it has something to do with his former home.  He does well with most kids but sometimes I think they remind him of  the ones he used to be with. I do not know if they mistreated him, but sometimes children are a bit overwhelming to some dogs.  He is neutered and has a wonderful personality.  I would lie to place him in a home with out children.   Update:5-16-2002 Elvis has been adopted and living with a border collie and his human companions. Updated 6-18-2002
Foxie Foxie is approximately a 3 years old red and white female Basenji. She was found in Mansfield , Ohio. She arrived on 5-12-2002. She does well in the crate (cries a little at first). She walks on leash very gently. I took her to the vet and she cried once during a needle shot , but did not get upset or try to snap or bite anyone. She gets along with other Basenjis.  She also did well when I gave her a bath, she did not like it  it , but mostly just stood there. She is spayed and has been checked and negative on fecal, urine (slightly high on PH scale right now- no problem) and negative on the heartworm. She has had all her vaccinations including rabies . Update 5-16-2002 . Foxie has found a new home . Update 6-15-2002
Gracie Gracie is a 7 month old red & white female basenji turned into rescue because she did not get along with the owners Boston Terrier. She was bought at a Petland in the Columbus Ohio area. She was with rescue for 6 weeks for evaluation and was adopted in mid August to a family of three humans. She gets to visit when they go out of town and they only live 2 miles from me. She gets lots of walks when the mother picks the son up at school each day. Updated : 9-6-1999
Gretta Gretta was a 1 1/2 year old female basenji from the Capital Area Humane Society in Columbus, Ohio. She had a little Sheltie in her. She was a great ball retriever and got along with all the other dogs. She stayed with us for almost two years ( I hated to give her up) and is living in Cleveland , Ohio area now.
Groucho Groucho is a 3 year old red and white male Basenji.i.   He was rescued from a puppy mill auction in March 13 in Missouri. Two other Basenjis came with him (Dazzle and Nora)  It appears that he has had little or no human contact. He knows no commands or words such has "good boyl" etc  and cringes or hides from any human. The 3 Basenji's are starting to loosen up in the backyard as they are moving a little more freely when I am not around.  I am actually starting to get them to go back in the house by herding them toward the door. It is hard to imagination that someone could treat the dogs like this.  He has visited the vet and is negative on fecal, urine and heartworm and has been updated on all him shots. I will start to to introduce him to other Basenji's here to get him to know it is ok  and to help build his confidence level. It will be a few weeks at least before he even starts to come out of his shell. He is not currently available for adoption as she needs to complete his evaluation period and retraining. Please do not apply for him yet as I am not sure what kind of Basenji he will turn out to be and how long it will take to evaluate and retrain him. He is so scared that he will sleep next to me all night and will  no move except to pick his head up once in awhile. He usually just hides his head. If I leave the crate door open he will not come out at all. Updated 3-15-2001
Hank Hank was a red and white male about 2 years of age. His former owners were older and did not have a fenced in yard so they could exercise him. He was place in a home with two single adult males. It was expressed by rescue that 'rough hosing' with basenjis is not recommend'. After two years The owners (adopted family) called and reported he was having problems with his new girlfriend, which the dog had bitten several times. He did not want to try behavioral training and a compromise between his girlfriend and him stated that no dog for him and no cat for her. Since there was a record of the dog biting with authorities. Placement was not an option. The dog was put to sleep.

There is no information about how he does with other animals and no information how he does with children. Updated 03-13-2005. His visit to the vet went very well. Except for some stress of moving from place to place  producing an allergic reaction  (skin irritation). The and her assistant are Basenji owners as well and they think his personality is wonderful. Jake

click on name of Basenji to see pictures. There are 5 pics of Jake total=289K

Jake is a 10 year old male red and white Basenji. He is neutered. He is up to date on shots, I will need to take him into the clinic for heartworm, fecal and urine  test and to let Dr. Tracy Leonard look him over. . His former owners needed to move into a another location and could not take him with them. He has been raised with children and a cat. He does not like the crate. He generally stays in the house when we are not at home. He gets along with other B's but I am not sure he wants to be around them. He is not destructive, but he will get in the trash can once in awhile (I think when he thinks it is supper time and he is hungry).  He is a couch potato, but do not let this fool you. he does well on walks (does not pull on the leash. He does like to go for walks to pee and poop and only likes to be in the backyard when we are there with him (he will try to climb fence to get back in the house (he can climb very well). He is house trained and will tell us when he needs to go out. He is grumpy in the morning and generally is sleepy when waling when he gets up. He will squat in the street , sidewalk or grass , whichever is convenient for him. He howled quite after at first when he was not getting attention or we went outside, but has settled down. I would keep him if I did not already have 4 Basenjis.  During dinner time he may come over and put his head in your lap and wag his tail to be for food. Normally he will just sleep on the couch unless he is called over to the table for a treat. He is an excellent dog to be someone's companion. Adoption donation  negotiable due to age of dog. Click here to send email about Jake  for any additional information. Updated 8-24-2003. Additional note- we have been letting Jake out in the house when we go to work and he is more relaxed and such a happy dog. He does not tear anything up but he will get into the dog food if he finds it (typical Basenji). Updated 8-28-2003. Jake has been adopted. He is living with another B.E.A.R. rescue dog named "Wilily" in Dayton , Ohio.. Updated 10-06-2003.
Jay Jay is a 7 year old liver and white neutered male that was turned in because the woman who got him from her boss did not have proper time or facilities to care for him. She did not want to crate and he was destructive in the house. She said she had to keep him outdoors. We wormed him and put him on Thyroid and Eukanuba Senior diet. He is a bit of a chewer on stuffed animals but he is very sweet and baruuhs. Jay is living in Georgia and goes by the name of Chance and lives with his new best friend "Peaches". The new owners have been very nice and updating me alot about him and allowing me to help in his adjusting to his new home. I plan on visiting him when I go lure coursing in Georgia this fall. Updated 6/1/2000. Jay lived a happy few years with his new family. They would call me about once a month on updates. They were very proud of Jay. Jay died when he ran into the street and was struck by a car. Updated 9-26-2003
Jesse Jesse is a 2 year old red and white male neutered Basenji. He came in with Chisum. His former owner was getting ready to deploy somewhere in the military and was not able to take them with them. He currently has a chunk of ear out of his right side due to an unforeseen fight with another Basenji before coming into rescue. He is very sweet but needs some work. He does not liked to be moved when he is sleeping (I will move him a lot to de-sensitize him of this behavior). . He does yodel. He is partially crate trained and sometimes takes him a little to settle in but he his making great strides in this area. He knows to sit. Updated 10-11-2000. Jesse was born on 12-15-98. His ear is doing fine and his temperament is really nice and playful. He will yodel outside when I am there and he is happy. He is running with my Clancy, solamon, Chisum (all boys). He is not picky on the food he eats and I feed him dry and he gobbles it up. Updated 11-13-2000. Jesse has been adopted to a family of 3. He sleeps with the son and some issue had to be workedout . He leaves the famil's Teddy Bear collection alone. Updated 12-13-2000
Jimmy Jimmy's pedigree
Jimmy is a black & white male (neutered) Basenji. He was turned into rescue because the previous owner could not deal with his aggressiveness. She has a 7 month old baby and her husband died in a car accident a month ago and she is pregnant with another baby. When I first saw Jimmy, he almost took my hand off trying to get him out of the crate. After I got him home and let him get a layout of the land and spend two days being with me most of the time, he has warmed up to me. I can take him in/out of the crate and take food from his mouth etc. He has separation anxiety, but is quiet in his crate. (Update: 9/10/99). Updated : 9/20/99) Jimmy was found to be aggressive toward everyone he met and could not be trusted in a home where there was a chance that someone new would come into the home and get bit.. Jimmy was put to sleep.
Joee Joee is a red and white female placed into rescue at age 1 1/2 years. She lived with a family of four and a fenced yard. They also used an 'Invisible fence' on her also. They were told by an in-house trainer not to turn the collar up so high (for a large breed) but they ignored him. . . She learned to walk on her hind quarters to be further away from the shock line buried in the ground, which let her get closer to the real fence and then climb over it. She was very aggressive toward the family and could not be trusted with the children. Her two sisters and nephew were also placed into rescue later. She was my first rescue and I still have her at age 7. She is my alpha of the dog pack of B.E.A.R.. I decided to try her at lure coursing since she liked running away. I had to be quite inventive on the recalls (tackles, bundled horse hair to look like a voodoo doll etc) to get her back. Now at age 61/2 she stops at the end (almost every time. The lure coursing has mellowed her out and has showed her how to have fun. She has had many accomplishments as a rescue:

Joey Joey is a 1.5 yrs old , red & white male neutered Basenji and was acquired  on 9-25-00. His AKC name is   Joseph Lynne Woellert and he was born on 1/02/99. He is very well crate trained. He was originally from a breeder (in Indiana) who was to turn him and 4 other B's into rescue for placement. The night before pickup they disappeared and the breeder would not disclose their whereabouts. This was in May of 2000, but in September of 2000 I was notified that they were living just 12 miles from my house on a rescue ranch with a zebra, a kangaroo, lots of dogs and a 2600 pound draft horse. . Updated 10-10-2000. He is doing well after he was separated from Claire and Pokie. He goes into his crate and eats well into 2 cups for dinner. I am working on getting him to run with other dogs. He wags his tail alot and kisses alot as well. I am still trying to break his kennel habit of trying to poop on the floor. He does try to tell me sometimes. Update: 11-13-2000 Updated 11-13-2000. The main requirement I have for Joey is either an 8 foot fence or a kennel run that has a top on it or an owner who lives in an apartment and loves to take walks. He can jump (not climb) a 6 foot fence. He is very loving and jumps into his crate. Updated 3-9-2001. Joey was adopted on 6-10-2001 and is now living in an apartment in Cincinatti, Oh
Johan Johan was a 1 1/2 year old black and white male. He was placed into rescue at because of the family was getting a divorce. He was a very vocal basenji so they decided to get his vocal cords cut. His mother was Alex and his father was Ozzie (both also went through rescue). He was brought up with kids . He is now living in Cincinnati with a family of four and one other basenji. He gets along with the children better then the original dog.
Kadja Kadja was a red and white female approx. age of 3 yr. from Kentucky. She has been living in Cleveland for about 4 years now with a family of three. She was turned over to a Lab rescue person in KY that contacted me.
Katema She is a 6 year old red & white female turned into rescue due to being too aggressive and the owners were getting a baby. I evaluated her for several months. She was a great dog. She went back to live in Cincinnati with a new owner. The new owner turned "Corky" into me after he was placed with them as a rescue. She is doing fine and the new owners are love her very much. She is a very strong built female. (solid muscle).
Kathy Leigh Kathy Leigh and Regis were from Kentucky. She was 1 year old red and white at the time placed into rescue. She is a red and white female. Her brother and her were originally traded for a computer and when the new owners could not handle them they were turned into rescue. They had their own language between themselves. They had really bad coats since they were kept outside all the time all year long. She is living in Dayton Ohio with a single person.
Kay` Kay is a 7 year old red and white female. Her former owner did not have time for her any more. She was becoming destructive due to lack of attention. She is very loving and cuddly. She did not like me at first since she sensed that she was being left with me. An hour in the crate (screaming) and she came out a loving little darling.. She is crate and trained and housebroken. She does cry in her crate once in awhile. She did very well at Dr. Tracy's clinic when she got her updated vaccines. She was negative on heartworm , fecal and urine. She loves to get under a pillow or a blanket to sleep. She hated and fought with the 2 males  (Chisum and Kramer) I run her with, but on the 3rd week of evaluation, she started playing with them. It is not true love yet but it is getting better. Basenji's start coming out of their shell about the 3rd or 4th  week. Updated 3-9-2001. Kay was spayed on  3-12-2001 and did fine. She had a bad tooth and it was removed. She has turned out to be a very sweet girl. Updated 3-15-2001. Kay was adopted on 6-09-2001 and is now living in N.E Ohio
Kody Kody was a 2 year old red and white male found in the Lexington, KY animal shelter by Nick Russell. Denise Vertise transported him to us. Hen is now living in and older woman as a companion.
Kit Kat Kit Kat is a 3 year old R&W female , petite in size but makes up for it in loving attitude. She was turned into the Hamilton County Animal shelter in Cincinnati , Ohio.   She runs with all the other rescues on this update. She is ready for adoption almost any time now. She is crate trained, but sometimes scratches at the crate until you tell her to stop.. She runs with the other rescues on this page. Kit Kat is currently living in Northwest Ohio with a woman and her mother, Updated 8-12-2000.
Kramer Kramer (named after the character on "Seinfeld" TV show) arrived this morning. He is very fat and has no front teeth  just the back ones for chewing. He weighs in at 35 lbs (per the owner).  Just remember that and when I show you a picture later on then you can compare them. The owner will be back in May and will be able to tell me if she is staying in Ireland or not. I told her if she does come back to let me know. The way the dog is now weight and temperament, he will not be ready for awhile. He is getting medication for his eye (irritation)  and he is also on thyroid. I am going to have him tested for the thyroid and also for the eyes.It felt weird to let a dog eat a treat ad only feel gums.   I had a hard time getting him in his crate when I was leaving to do that night. There was much anxiety and confrontation between the two of us. I got bit and I got mad, he was mad and upset. I finally stepped back and used a different tactic and cornered him 2 pieces of cardboard and forced him backwards into a small 200 travel crate. gave him food and that was it for the night. He is crate trained and housebroken. He still whines a little in the crate but quiets down after awhile   Updated-02/11/2001.    I tried to get him out to the back yard but he would not go. I put a leash on him and he would let me take out the front , so that is how I walk him for the next few days. He is now able to go into his crate (big wire one with his own dog bed that the owner brought him). I am currently feeding him Eukanuba Senior plus prescription from the vet that I give to some of my older dog). He will lay with me sometimes and be friendly, but still growls when I reach into the crate to try to pet him. He did fall down the Basement steps twice as he came in from the back door. He acted like he did not see them. I suspect advanced eye problems. Other things he has done is to walk up to various items and did not notice them until he was on top of them. Updated- 2/12/2001.  Kramer is getting into a routing and goes outside with Chisum and Eliie May. Chisum is wearing him down and now they are starting to play. Kramer did not want to play before. He yodel today (good sign- he wanted his food). He let me play a little with him and wagging his tail. I still am very careful around him at all times. He does let me pick him up, but his tail and paws are still off limits, I touch them once in awhile to start de-sensitizing him to this. Updated- 2/16/2001. As I am writing this he came over to me and stood there like he wanted to be petted. I scratched his ears with vigor. The next thing I new I was playing with him and he was wagging his tail, my hand was in his mouth as he was playfully gumming me (remember no teeth). Just then Chisum and Ellie May joined in with some yodels and started playing with him. Kramer is really doing better. He is off the Thyroid for now. He is becoming more playful and lets me do a lot of things to him. He and Chisum started playing together in the last few days. His former owners told me he will not go outside without them.  He now goes outside with Chisum and Kay. I think he did not like to due to his eyesight problem.  I know when he is upset and does not want to be touched but I do anyway and praise him when doing so. He is starting to feel better about himself and it shows. He walks around  with a bit of a happy face.  Kramer still has a way to go, but a avid B owner would have no problem with him. He loves to be scratched and ears rubbed. I have not tried to do his nails as I think I will sedate him and muzzle him , just in case. Updated- 3/6/2001. Kramer has become increasingly aggressive  intermittently. I think because his eyesightis getting worse , he is getting more frustrating. He has tried to bite me several times. It was decided to put him down for temperment reasons Updated 6/01/2001
Kyra Kyra was a 6 year old red and white fat spayed female. She was turned into rescue because the kids left for college and the mother did not want her. She was very fat and lovable. She was not very big but lovable. She found a home in Cincinnati Ohio   with two guys , but she did not like it with the other male basenji (he was jealous as well) so she came back. She stayed with us for a while for evaluation. Update3/99- She has been adopted by an older couple in Indiana and lives with a 3-year-old red and white male as her companion.
Lady Lady is a 9 month old red and white male Basenji. she and Champ were purchased from a backyard breeder who told them that these were outdoor dogs year round.  She needs some work on her leash as she was never trained on a leash. She does well in a crate, but She stays in there with her brother Champ .  She is really shy, but is very happy and wags her tail.  She needs some confidence. She is a puppy. He will be updated on shots before she is adopted and she is already spayed.. Updated 8-20-2001.  Lady was adopted in November and living in Ohio not too far from B.E.A.R..  Updated  12-20-2001.

She and 8 other puppies were on their way to the animal shelter. At this point we are needing to complete the shots and test and then spay her before she can be placed . Updated 01-04-2003. she is settling in and is very friendly and outgoing with the others. she is still leery of people but that is to be expected since she has been in a few homes. she is a tail wagger. She has an undershot bit. she has had her first puppy shots and is in the process of being dewormed. .  she has learned to climb the basement steps when going to go outside to the toilet.  I have had no problems  handling her. she is not leash trained yet. she does well in the crate and has learned to sleep by herself instead of having others in bed with her for company.. She will be spayed as soon as she is cleared of worms.  Updated 1-13-2004 . she is doing fine. She is scheduled to be spayed on 2/5/04. She can climb the basement stairs but is a little scared when doing by herself when she thinks about it. She is friendly towards me but like the rest are very aloft as if no socialization has ever taken place. She warms ups quickly. I can pick her up with no problem and she has a good appetite. I am working on her jumping into the crate when they come in by placing food inside. This will help her think of the crate as a happy place and not just something to be thrown into  .  She will be available for adoption 10-14 days past her spays surgery (weekend of 2/20/2004. Updated 1/22/2004.  Larissa was adopted on 2/15/2004 and is living in Oxford , Ohio. Updated 2/116/2004. She was returned anbd later re-adopted and was living in NE ohio where she escaped and never caught. Multiple sightings have ben made , but she still remins at large. Update 7-1-2005
Larsen Larsen was a red and white male basenji from Cleveland that was given up for adoption because he was aggressive towards the wife. He was both very pleasant , and aggressive to me. The breeder would not even take him back except to put him down. A Michigan rescue group took him since the breeder was in their area/club. He stayed with me for several months for retraining. He was placed with a mother and daughter, but later reverted back to his old self and bit the owner. He was put to sleep for his aggressive temperament.
Levi Levi was turned into rescue by his owner after their neighbor notified me of the situation. The basenji was left chained up day and night outside to a doghouse. He was constantly going over the fence and almost hanging himself. He is now living with his new owner (a person with whom I work and Levi lives across the street from my work) and I get to see him quite often. He is happy.
Levi (Leviathan) Levi a 1.5 year old male R&W. . His owner could not take care of him due to working 2 jobs, Her boyfriend did not like the dog either and she lived with him. He has a good temperament and does well in a crate. He is running with all the  other rescues . He seems to be ready for adoption at any time as longs as nothing comes up to change my mind. Levi is happily living with 5 humans and some shelties in southwest Ohio. Updated 8-12-2000.
Lightning Lightning was rescued from the Montgomery County animal shelter in Dayton, Ohio. He was a 2 year old red and white Basenji. He was in the rescue for about 3 months. He was very friendly and loving and playful. The drawback was that he would have become aggressive at a moment's notice with out warning. The first time he was wide awake and going outside, when he turned and bit me in the crotch area of my sweat pants. Luckily my sweat pants were baggy and nothing important was hurt. The next time he bit me as I walked by him while he was lying in a chair. He knew I was there since he watched me go from the couch to the kitchen. The rescue organization decided he was unfit to adopt since there was no cause for his aggressive behavior. He was put down.
Lilly Lilly was a 2 year old black and white female Basenji.  She arrived on New years eve on 12-31-2001 with Mica. She is a sweet litte girl. The former owner did not take care of them and left her and Mica outside in every type of weather year round. She is now living in Maryland with the daughter of the family who adopted Duke. Duke and her get to play together now.  Update 4-18-202

Mia She was a 2-3 year old red & white female Basenji from the Capital Area Humane Society in Columbus , Ohio. The shelter calls me whenever a Basenji comes in. They feel the Basenji is not a dog to be put into the general adoption area. She was originally placed in Lebanon , Ohio with a couple with no children. She stayed with them for about 2 years and then returned due to that they could not control her. She was very jealous (they taught her that) of anything that took attention away from her. Updated : 6-1999 - She is now living in Cincinnati , Ohio and the family knows how to handle her, if she growls then they grab her by the muzzle and say "NO" and she then respects that person and obeys them, even the kids.
Mica Mica was a red and white male Basenji about 2-3 years old. He was rescued from a neighbors yard of the person who rescued them. She turned them over to rescue. Apparently they were left outside all the time even in  winter. He and Lilly brought them to me on New Tears Eve , 12/31/2001.  He bit me within a few minutes of arriving. He then bit me 2 the next day simply out of fear but I was sitting there when he walked by and bit me. Any time I tried to touch him he would attack me. He was terminate (put to sleep) 14 days later. He had learned to bit humans because of the man that did not treat them well after his wife left him. Updated 12-15-2001
Mona (3/99) Mona was a 1 year old red & white female basenji that came from the Capital Area Humane Society in Columbus , Ohio.. She was very sweet and energetic. She is now living happily in Columbus with a family of three.
Nala Nala is a 6 year old red and white female Basenji. She was rescued because the family thought it best to put here where she can be cared for by a family with more time for her. She is a very sweet mild manner girl. She loves to lay on the heating vent and on the back of the couch. She does not seem destructive and is content to just lay there next to you. She was not liking the crate very well when she came here but is doing alot better now. She eats very well and is not picky. According to her former owners, she does not get along with cats. I have put her with several other Basenjis both male and female and she has done wonderful. She has been raised around kids but she seems to be content with adults. Uodated 2-3-2001 / Nala was adopted but the owner had a cat and it stressed Nala too much. She attacked the cat and peed in her crate whn she was adopted out recently. She is back in rescue and looking for another home. Updated 3-9-2001. Nala has been Adopted Updated 8-30-2001. Nala is being returned to rescue. e did not get along with the young B the family already adopted from me.  Update 9-22-2001.

She is lovable and does well in the crate. she is not leased trained yet. She will be scheduled for spaying as soon as we can do it Updated 1-13-2004
Nora Nora is a 3 year old red and white female Basenji. i.   She was rescued from a puppy mill auction in March 13 in Missouri. Two other Basenjis came with her (Groucho and Dazzle ). r. Updated 3-15-2001
Nova Nova is a red and White female Basenji approximately 1.5 yrs  old. she came from the Elkhart, IN animal shelter. She is very sweet and crate trained. She wags her tail and loves to cuddle. Ody

click on name of Basenji to see pictures. There are 7 pics of Ody  total=221K

Ody is a 5.5 yr old (DOB 01-06-97) red/white neutered male Basenji. According to the vet record he weighs 62 pounds. I will take him in to Dr. Tracy Leonard DVM office this week to verify this. He is a big boy. I  just got him into rescue and I have not completed a full evaluation of him yet. From the previous owners write up of Ody: He walks well on lead, sits quietly in crate so far. He is a bit touchy about touching his feet (I will be working on this). sometime he does not like to be picked up and lets you know. Once he looses  most of his excess weight, I think this be a less of a problem. He does well with cats  (per the owner) and he is gentle when taking treats by your hand. Per the owner he likes to snuggle on the couch, forehead and ears rubbed and scratched, , bananas and orange slices,  bathing in sun, tug of war games with his toys, being top dog,  chasing birds. per the owner, he hates: rubbing his feet,  being picked up,  sharing attention with other dogs, sharing  his toys with other dogs.: I am working on the feet issue and about picking him up.. He knows how to sit on command and to lay down on command. he likes to sleep in his dog bed  as well. I will update his information on the B.E.A.R. website in the adoption center section as I evaluate him more. He is behaving very well for a Basenji who has been thrown into a new environment. Updated 10-07-2003. Ody has been wonderful Basenji. He does well in the crate and hen likes to sleep in the bed with someone. He has adjusted quite well. He is housebroken. He needs to be placed in a single dog environment since he wants to be the only dog and gets jealous and territorial. He gets into the bathroom trash once in a while. He walks well on lead. He will lei me turn him over but  not used to being picked up even though I can do it anyway. I think he will make a wonderful pet . As I write this he came  up to me a scratched  my leg with his paw meaning he wants attention or  to go outside to go to the bathroom... Updated 10-20-2003. ODY went to his new home in Michigan . Updated 12-28-03.

Ozzie Ozzie was a 2 year old red and white male that was originally owned by the same person who had ALEX (#1). He was placed into a home by that person. The owners are now looking to get a companion for him. They have two children that get along fine with him.

Phoebe Phoebe was a red and white very fat female(4/99) She was brought to me from New York City. She was becoming aggressive and biting people that walked by her when her owners took her for a walk. They were very loving owners but did not know what to do. Their vet told them she also needed surgery on her knee for ACL (the football injury). When I saw her , she was verrrrrry fat.. My first goal was the weight reduction to help with her knee and her attitude. This did not help. After several biting incidents (without provocation, She was put to sleep. We decided that she could not be placed on any long term program. She was 7.5 years old. And had her chance to reform.
Pixie Pixie (Ch. D'MAX PIXIE PRIDE) . Pixie came into rescue at 11 yr. old. Her former owners were going back to school and had 1 baby and another one on the way. She originally started out in Texas, but then lived in Kansas for awhile. We decided to have her "earn her keep" so we decided to keep her and show her occasionally. She was the oldest showing basenji at the national in Allentown and also in Portland, Oregon. In Portland she won 3rd place in veteran bitch class at the Evergreen Specialty and 3rd place in BCOA national specialty sweepstakes 13+ yrs veterans bitch class. She was a sweet old gal. She loved to go lure coursing (as a mascot) with us and the other basenji's. She came into my house as a fat old girl who only woke up to yodel for her dinner and then go out as a spry girl who enjoyed walking around the block (w/out lead) enjoying life a little better. Pixie was very lethargic at first but when we put her on thyroid medication, she became very active. She thought one of our other basenji's (Merlin at 1 yrs old) was her stud muffin and let him cuddle to her. He thought she was his mother. Pixie passed away in May of 1996. She is missed by all of us and will always have a place in our hearts.
Poco Poco is a red and white 1 year old unneutered male from Michigan. He was turned into rescue because he was destructive (what do you think Basenji's are-owner m never was educated). We neutered him and he is doing fine He is not destructive and as soon as his staples come out he will be introduced to other Basenjis to work on social skills. We have had him with other dogs and he did very little. Updated: 2-28-2000

Updated 4-28-2004.  Presto is one of the sweetest Basenjis I have had. even though 7 years old he has plenty of energy and love for many years. He would be a great Basenji to learn about this breed. I would keep him if I had the room, but he deserves to be with a family where he is the center of affection and not shared with others (except if he has a companion dog to be with). Princess Princess was a 1 year old black and white female from Columbus, Ohio. An elderly couple go her from the shelter for protection When she tore up (chewed ) shoes etc, they decided that princess was too much for them. She was not too fond of men. Her new home was a result of a chance meeting of their son at Dr. Tracy Leonard's vet clinic. The son had a basenji and thought the parents would like one. Well she did her own sell job. She went right over to the husband of the couple who were looking at her and placed her head in his lap, the rest was history. She is living in Kettering Ohio (suburb of Dayton) and very happy.

Quasi is a 3 year old Red and white neutered male Basenji. He is very sweet. He has been in the house here for about 2 weeks. He is very loving and wants to be right in the middle of everyone. He is one of the sweetest boys I have had here in the rescue. He knows sit, lay down, off and come. He loves to play. He likes to be with people and at this point with the cold weather does not want to stay outside at all (except to pee and poop). I am not sure about children as I have none of my own. He has done very well with strangers coming into the house. One funny thing he does is to put his 2 front paws on my wife while she is standing (cooking in the kitchen etc) and stretch standing up. When he arrived he had the following problems: 1) He does not get along with other Basenjis too. Improvement:- He is now getting along with them. We have had no real “discussions” for a while now. He actually tried to play with my one female but she became snarky at him. 2) He was a little aggressive when taking things he feels ";threatened". Improvement:- I now can take things such as toilet paper or other trash with no problems. I have created situations that would prove himself and he has become a very good dog in this area.. Before I could not do his nails and now I can trim them with minor little noise from him. I can pick him up, turn him over in any position and he is like putty and just rolls with the punches.. I can also place my hand over his food bowl or take his food away while he is eating with no problems. He is a fine dog and anyone    would be happy to have him in their home. If I did not have 4 basenjis    now I would keep him my self. He loves to be with us on the sofa, in bed    or just sitting next to you while you are on the computer etc. He loves    to play as we do our early morning romp in the living room together    before I leave for work. He is a basenji and likes getting into trouble    with the trash, toilet paper and anything he feels he should have as a    basenji.. He takes correction very well.. Updated:    02-12-2005. Quasi was adopted and is now living in southwest ohio with a companion rescue Basenji. updated 3-1-2005
Reddi Reddi was a 1 year old red and white un-neutered male that came from a Springfield , Ohio animal shelter when they called me the Monday after Christmas. He was turned in at age 1 year old because he was destructive and aggressive. After 7 weeks of evaluation, the only thing he did was nip at you when you walked (easily cured). He was cured of worms and neutered and living with an Air Force family in Dayton Ohio. Reddi returned into rescue at  is a 1.5 year old & R&W male neutered. He was adopted last February but the owners now realized an older dog is what they want. They are re-evaluating their needs and will come back for one later on .  His temperament is good and is ready for adoption now. He is running with all the other Basenji rescues. Updated 10-10-2000
Regis Regis came into rescue at age 1 with his sister Kathy Leigh. He is a red and white male basenji. He and his sister had their own language and were originally traded for a computer. When the new owners could not handle their antics they were placed into rescue. They were from Owensboro, Kentucky. He is not living in Fairborn, Ohio (near Dayton) for several years now. I see him sometimes at the vet clinic. His new name is ROCKET. He is scared to go into a dark back yard but it worked out since the mother of the family of fours goes for walks at night and loves the company/protection.
Rhett Rhett was a 1 year old red and white male basenji placed into rescue because the owners baby was allergic to the dog, even though they bathe the dog every week. He is now living in Dayton, Ohio with a family of 5 and a big yard to run in.
Rock Rock is a 3 year old B&W. He was turned in with Blaze because his family was moving and did not want them anymore. He seems to need Blaze and has separation anxiety when she is not around. I am running him with all the other dogs and that seems to be helping. He sleeps in the crate next to Blaze. He is starting to go outside with the others with out looking for Blaze right away. Depending on his separation anxiety it will depend on the adoption timeframe. Updated 7-4-2000. Rocky is now living in the "Rockies" in Colorado. The new owners had just rescued another Basenji that was left tied out all the time with other dogs that were being killed by coyotes that would come down from the hills for food. Updated 2-3-2001
Rudy Rudy was a 1-2 year old red and white male basenji found running loose in Indiana trying to get on a school bus with kids. He is now living in Camden, Ohio with a young couple.
Sam Sam is a 1 year old red and white male Basenji , who was found wondering around in mid Ohio area. At this time I have very little for a background information on him. He rides in the car in a crate well. He is very playful with other Basenjis and people. He takes a bath very easily with minor contempt for this event. At the present time he is not neutered but will be very shortly in the future along with his vaccines.}. I will post more info as it becomes available. Click on his name to see pictures of Sam. Updated 3-1-2003.    Sam rode in my arms and was perfectly relaxed until the car was parked and he got excited. He weighed in at 20 ponds he was negative on fecal and heartworm and now has a complete update on all shots. He was a big baby, not so tough, during shots and the taking of his blood for the heartworm test.  Sam is scheduled for  his neutering  surgery on Friday  (1111113/28/2003). I am still having a bit of an issue with him peeing in crate but he seems to improve each day but a long way to go. He has had a good  temperament so far,. He does not like his nails trimmed with a Dremmel toll. Updated  3/23/2003. Sam was neutered on 3-27-2003 and did very well. Updated 3-27-2003. Sam was adopted and  is living in Dayton with his new owner. Updated 3-9-2003
Rusty Rusty was a red and white approx. 2.5 years old male Basenji. The people decided he was too much for them. They did not even take him to the vet for his vaccinations. It too k me 2 days to get him out of the crate. I tricked him into going outdoors. Once outside I used play bows  to gain his trust. Before that I could not approach him as he would try to attack me.  After that he would not even try to bite me in any way. He crate trained very easily. I was able to give him a bath with no problem.  He had a problem with strangers. He was aggressive toward everyone but me.   I had scheduled him to be neutered but on the morning of the operation he went ballistic in the clinic. no one could touch him.  He was terminated later that day. We felt that if he ever got away and met with any strangers (especially children ) that he would probably try to bite them. Updated 3-31-2002

She was placed in a home of an older couple that like to camp. She is living near Indian Lake, Ohio. By the way she was only 18 pounds when she left for her new home.
Shadow Shadow was a 2 year old red and white male basenji. His former owners asked me to take him because he was very aggressive. They had already bred him to their female. We had him neutered to see if that would help. It did not. One minute you would be petting him and the next he would turn on you with a great deal of anger. There was never any indication of when it would happen. The dog was put to sleep.

Solomon's pedigree Solomon's food and mineral supplement
(11/98) He is a 5.5 year old Tri male that was turned in after the owners split up. The girl friend tried to keep him but he kept pooping and peeing in the crate. I was able to crate train him, but not stop him from peeing. I had his urine tested in January and showed he was dumping sugar. We tested his blood and it showed no sugar. We have diagnosed him with Fanconi, a disease that attacks the kidneys. He was weighing 22 pounds and getting lighter every week. He was on Pet tabs Plus, Pet Cal, Thyroid, Amino Acid tablets, Centrum vitamins, Dog Bloom Supresme  vitamins, dog Blooms Wate bloom, and the "Missing Link " food supplement. and"Stress- Dex"  that has electrolytes. On 6-19-2001 Solomon was put to sleep. He wasa with me for almost 3 years. He was going to be 8 this year. I will miss him terribly , but not the cleaning of his crate 4-6 times a day. He was a good boy and never gave me much trouble. He had a wonderful temperment , which made it possible to endure this  disease with him.   No matter how long it it is, his crate will always be known as "Solomon's crate" . Updated 6-20-2001.
Sounder He is a Tri that the breeder asked if we could help place him. He was about 6 years old and neutered. The breeder was no longer breeding anymore for several years and was not in the position to take the Basenji back at this time. He was placed in a home near Toledo Ohio
Sparky Sparky is a 3 year old red and white that was turned in by Connie (Reid) Camp who got him from a person who wanted to give him up. He was chained outside in North Carolina all the time. He wore a spike collar (why). We de-wormed him (they were sticking out his anal opening and saying "hey dude where's this bus going?". He is now living in Indiana with a family that adopted Kyra last year. They lost Kyra to diabetes and their Simba shortly afterwards to a car. They also adopted 2 female mixes from Chicago recently (Baby and Lady). Updated 2-15-2000
Star Star is a 1 year old black and white female Basenji. She was turned into rescue 1 week before her first birthday. The family just had a baby and it was too much for the new mother to take care of the puppy Basenji and the newborn baby. She has been spayed and is crate trained (as long as her blanket is in the crate too). She is very active and a real chewer, but that's a Basenji's. She is up to date on shots, she has had a urine, fecal and heartworm check before she was spayed in November.. I have a possible new owner coming to look at her on Saturday (2-10-2001), but I will still accept applicants in case they do not take her. Star has been a dopted with several kids around and loves them. Updated 2-17-2001.
Sweetie (Kenya) Sweetie (Kenya)  is a red and white female Basenji , approximately 3 yrs old. She was dumped at a shelter in the northern  Kentucky / southern Ohio area.  She is up to date on all shots, fecal, urine and heartworm tests are negative. It is a bit vague about what happened, but I think the family was moving and  they did not want to take her along. She is a bit leery of men and when approached she growls, but she has let me pick her up. I think the shelter was very bad for her and her family dumping her was not good either. I think she is going to be good Basenji.  We have no information on how she does with children. I immediately put her in the back yard with a neutered male and it was ok, but this was the first day. She will not be ready for at least for 5-8 weeks to  properly evaluate her and adjust her attitude. I was able to touch her paws in between her toes on the way home from the Vets. Bu the way, I picked her up at the vet clinic (Dr. Tracy Leonard DVM who helps with the rescue and has Basenjis also) for the first time.  I will be accepting applications, but she will not be available for several weeks. Update 5-24-2002.  She escaped  on memorial day weekend through 2 gates.  We found her at the shelter when they opened up on Tuesday. she has developed Kennel cough even though she was given all her vaccines including Brocatelle. She is playing more and like to sleep on  the doggie bed instead of the furniture.  She is also suffering from "dry eyes" and is currently being treated for it.  She is totally relax with strangers. She walks well on lead, as we walk 3 times a day  together.  I will be getting her spayed soon and a check up on the kennel cough. Updated  6-03-2002.  Sweetie has developed into a very playful sweet little girl. She no longer is frightened when men try to pick her up. She has just started to wag her tail.  She does not like to be in the back yard alone, even if there is another dog back there. Updated 7-3-2002  Sweetie is doing fine. she will be living in cincinatti . She does not like to stay out but loves the house.  Updated 7-23-2002

Taylor

Taylor (as older B)

Taylor was a 1 year old red and white male basenji. He is the nephew of Alex, Topaz, Joee and his mother was Lady. He was a bit oversized. He learned to open the refrigerator and let all the others get their stuff out. I placed him in a home of a young couple. He was one of my first rescues. I lost track of him , but later found out that he had gone through three (3) homes. He is now living with a couple whose son comes and takes Taylor for a run in the woods quite often.. Taylor returned to rescue in mid summer as the husband dies and she was not able to handle the personality of Talor. Updated 10-11-2000

Taylor is a7.5 year (born 1-28-93) old R&W male neutered Basenji of course. He was adopted several years ago as a 1 year old by B.E.A.R. and I lost track of him  when the owner moved. He went through a total of three owner  when I got a call about 2 years ago from a person stating he had a rescue of mine. I did not recognize the persons name and said I did not adopt a B to him. He then told me the dogs name , Taylor, the nephew to my Joee.  Well the husband dies about a year ago and Taylor has not been taking it well and misses him. He has been getting worse in his temperament. It is decided to get him out of the environment and rehab him.  I will be getting him this week and will know more about him later. No adoption timeframe at this point. Updated 7-4-2000. Taylor has been running with Wrinkles, Duke, Dewey, Blaze and Rock. He and Joey did not get along at this time. He is a chow hound and yodels alot. He is a growler but this is not to be interpreted as aggression , but as talking. He is the nephew of my Joee and his mother lives in Piqua. I saw him saw him at 6-9 weeks old one time and then at 10 months when he entered the rescue program for the first time. Updated 11-13-200. Taylor has been Adopted Updated 8-30-2001

Tica Tica was a 3 year old red and white female from a Columbus, Ohio. She was very petite and did not like anyone to pick her up. She is now living in Indiana with Trooper (another rescue) with a family of three.
Topaz Topaz was a red and white 1 1/2 year old female basenji. She was purchased as a show dog. The husband then discovered that she was not really show quality and thus ignored her. The wife did not care for dogs but took care of her until she called B.E.A.R.. She is the sister of Alex, and Joee and the aunt of Taylor and Johan, which were all rescues through B.E.A.R.. Topaz went to live with a single man who had roommates. They played rough house with here and she turned aggressive on his girl friend. She had also bitten a small girl in the neighborhood (no break in the skin). It was suggested that she go through behavioral training. It was a tremendous success. I visited her during and after the training and she was doing great..
Tristen - 7 year old Red and white neutered male. Tristen is a 7 year old red and white male Basenji. He is very sweet and lovable. He is crate and housetrained. He is leashed trained. He is used to being around people. He was raised by 2 woman who had to give him up due to a breakup of relationship and some personal issues of their own and not Tristen. I have evaluated him for 2 months. He has been a joy to have here. He gets along with other Basenjis (currently runs with 3 other adult males and a female puppy). He is looking for a good home. If you understand basenjis and their characteristics then you will love this guy. He is scheduled for  his nneutering next week. He is up to date on all his shots. He has been tested for heartworm, fecal (for worms). Urine (for fanconi) and all were negative. Updated 4-28-2004. Tristen has been adopted and living in Ohio. Update 6-14-2004.
Trooper Trooper was a 6 year old red and white male that was given up for adoption because the family had to give up their house and move into an apartment. He was very sweet and love to rub on clothes and towels. He is currently living in Indiana with another rescue (Tica) and a family of three. He sleeps with the young daughter and snores enough to wake her up. He has been adopted for over two (2) years now.
TY TY is a 1 year old black and white male unneutered. He was turned in by a family that had him 3 weeks, but did not get along with their Dachshund. They rescued him from a neighbor that left him tied out all the time, including in the snow. I am going to neuter him next week. His breeder would not take him back because he was a male and she still had the mother and father and she told the owners of TY that 2 male basenjis do not get along. I will contact then breeder who sold her dogs to her and let them educate her after I educate her. Updated 2-28-2000
Unnamed Springfield, Ohio Rescue This was a 12+ year old red and white female that was dropped off a man's house who took in everything. She was very crippled (one leg bent inward) , all her teeth were rotten, tumors all over her body and she had seborrhea, which smelled terrible. She had hook worms, tape worms etc and the foulest smelling diarrhea that I have ever smelled (it was bright yellow). We did not name her as we only had her for about 24 hours and put her to sleep, it was the humane thing to do.
Wiley Wiley is a 10.5 month old Brindle male Basenji.  His DOB is 12-17-2001.He was purchased at a pet store in Springfield Ohio. His story is like many others. Too stubborn and the wife is pregnant and she could not deal with him at this point  during her pregnancy. His temper is good. Likes to play. He will be taken to the clinic ASAP for a checkup and neutering and fecal and urine tests..  He is current on his shots. updated:10-30-2002 .  Wiley is joy but is very pesky. He likes to help cook and clean up every thing he can. He likes to pick up coins when he sees them. He does well in the house and has only 2 accidents in the house and 2 in his crate. He loves to be with people. He makes a wonderful bed partner. He is a very happy boy and does not take no for an answer. He knows "sit" and we are working on "lay down. He has been one of the most welcomed dogs here as a puppy. He is always happy". He has been neutered and had his dew claws removed. He recovered from the operation very successfully.updated:11-17-2002.  He is doing fine . he is really good about being in the crate now. updated:12-27-2002. Wiley has been adopted and living in central Ohio. Updated 1-5-2003
Willy Willy (also know as "One eyed Willy Wonka". He was given up by the breeder  to a local shelter in Indiana because he lost an eye in a puppy fight. He was adopted in December and now lives in West Virginia.  Updated: 12/20/2001
Willy #2 Willy is a 5 year old (previously reported as a 2 year old)  red and white  male Basenji. He was due to be put down (euthanasia)  at a vet clinic when I was contacted by the clinic to see he could have a second chance. He is very sweet and does well in a Vari Kennel  travel crate.  He likes to play but is very quiet in the house (for now). Once he get situated I feel he will be a little more active.  He walks well on the leash with minor pulling.  I am not sure about cats or  birds.  I have picked him up , rolled him over onto his back etc with no problems. The only problem is with his paws and touching  or grabbing them. He cries when someone does that due to a in-law parent picking him up and holding him upside down by his legs. I would be sensitive too.  He is neutered and has all his shots. New information from the previous owners- He is a very sweet boy and really won't get much more active than what he is now.  He loves to sleep, cuddle, take walks, play with other dogs, chase squirrels and birds...  Cats drive him crazy because he wants to play with them and he just ends up getting scratched.  I don't know that he would be able to live with a cat and leave the cat alone.  He tries his best to play with them and he wasn't raised with one so he doesn't know how to play well with them. Updated 6-18-2002 . Willy #2 has been adopted and living with a good family. well with them. Updated 7-3-2002.
Woody Woody is a 2 year old red and white male that came from the Hamilton!, Ohio animal shelter . He had been found running loose in the streets. He had a hurt leg, which surgery corrected. He is now living in Cincinnati with a family of four for about 2 years now.
Wrinkles Wrinkles is a 1.5 year old black & black and white neutered male. He was placed into rescue because he was peeing all over the house and then they placed him in the back yard where he was very destructive/  The owner dropped him off at Dr. Tracy's vet clinic. They immediately tested him for Fanconi etc and found he had a urinary tract infection (no wonder he was peeing all over- he has not done it once since he has been her for over a month and a half).  He weighed in at 32 whopping pounds. I have placed him and Taylor on Eukanuba Restricted Calorie dog food (prescription from vet).  He is very energetic and he , Taylor & Dewey play constantly (this helps with weight reduction). His temperament  is very good. He comes from the Kabar  Kennels and the breeder is no longer breeding or taking the dogs back. He needs some obedience training. He is crate trained. He has a video  on the web site and I will get a picture of him soon. Winles is now living in Columbus, Ohio with several other Basenji's and his new owner , who is a pet communicator (who stated that his mom called him Apache Arrow) . Updated 9-7-2000

he is a 8 month old red and white male Basenji he has not been socialized much but is very sweet. he was given up by a person who was breeding  basenjis and is getting out of the business. He and 8 other puppies were on their way to the animal helter. At this point we are needing to complete the shots and test and then neuter  him before he can be placed. Updated 01-04-2003. He is very friendly and easy to handle. He is crate trained but still has accidents in the crate is left too long. He has had his first puppy shots and is going to be neutered on 1-14-2004.  He is not leash trained. He like all the others is a very happy dog. One thing that struck me this morning. As I was taking him out to collect his stool sample for the vet check he  was by himself and there was ice covering the water in the water bucket in the expen. All the others just licked the ice but he pawed it until he broke a hole in it to drink from. Pretty smart dg . This could mean your house is not safe from this little monster (haha) or  he is just one smart cookie. He will be available for adoption starting  7-10 days from his surgery. . Updated 1-13-2004. Yakov is living in northern Ohio with a family of 2 and another basenji (female) and they send me pictures of his good life. Updated 7-1-2004.
