The Story of Switch Blades

(Barcelona Spain 1892)

"Mummy! Where are you going?!" The five-year-old burgundy haired girl shrieked, grabbing for her mother's hand.

"Your mother can't be with you any more. Now get away!" Barked the tall dark featured man pulling her mother out the door.

Squirming against the man's strong hold, the mother made one last request.

"Please! Let me at least tell her goodbye!" She pleaded.

"Fine." The man said throwing her across the room.

"Serena, my little rose…"she paused as she lifted the little girl's tear stained face so that she could gaze into those big, expressive cyan eyes one last time.

"Mummy…has to go away for a while, but I-"

"Alright, that's enough." The burly man said as he began to drag the mother away.

"Noooooooooo! Mummy!" Serena cried out.

"I love you Serena! Don't you ever forget that!" The mother cried out as she was hauled out the door.

Not being able to move, Serena watched the heavy wood door slam shut. Confused and heartbroken, she fled up the weak stair case and shut herself up in her room, immersing herself in sobs.

"Ugh" Serena moaned as she was awakened by a crash down below in the kitchen. She swung her long legs out from under the covers and rubbed her eyes groggily. Brushing through her hair with her fingers, she walked over to the mirror hanging above her dresser. Reaching down, she grabbed a silver chain necklace with a tiny blue orb pendant.

It had been her mothers, and Serena had stolen it while her father was getting rid of her mother's belongings after she had been hauled to a mental asylum. Gazing at her reflection in the minute mirror, she smiled to herself. I look just like mother did. Yet, her thoughts were rudely jarred as an angry voice broke through.

"Serena! Get your ass down stairs!" came her father's raspy, drunk voice. Sighing to herself, Serena reached into her dresser and pulled out a blue velvet afternoon dress. It was her favorite dress, as it had been her mother's as well, and it looked quite lovely on her.
