Exhibition Cup 1901

After Rangers won the Exhibition Cup of 1901, they insured the trophy for a massive £100 but hopes that the competition would become an annual event were dashed a year later by the Ibrox Disaster. To raise money for the victims, the trophy was put up for a competition between the winners and runners up of the Scottish and English Football Leagues. The British League Cup, as it was called, was won by Celtic, and the trophy remains in their trophy room to this day.

Trivia

Celtic v Sunderland – 30 April

Sunderland’s Walter Annan had just been signed from St Bernards on 24 April 24 (source The History of Sunderland, Bob Graham).

All Sunderland’s players were Scottish with the exception of English International Billy Hogg who later played for Rangers.

Matthew Ferguson died the following month (12 June) same source

Rangers v Everton - 3 May

Rangers came from behind to score twice in the last 10 minutes (The Scotsman).

John Walker who scored the winner was the ex Hearts star, newly signed from Liverpool. Rangers were weakened as they had 4 players in the Scotland team v England; N.Smith, Drummond, Robertson and A.Smith. Everton lost Settle to the same match.

The Final was delayed until 17 June to coincide with the Coronation of Edward VII (McIlroy and Ferrier)
