By 1942, several clubs had enough players to organize reserve sides. Rangers, Hibernian and Heart of Midlothian had managed to field two teams in the Southern League and North Eastern League, so in 1942, eight western club formed the Glasgow & District Reserve League. The first two seasons saw the league played over two series. Kilmarnock, who were not operating since 1940, entered their first team in the league’s last season.
