During the early 1900s, a series of friendly matches developed between amateur clubs across central Scotland. During 1908-09, Queen’s Park, in an attempt at finding both newer and better opposition for their 3rd Xi and 4th XIs, put up a trophy for competition on a league basis, their Victoria XI duly winning the first Scottish Amateur League championship. When Edinburgh Civil Service took the title the following season, Queens replaced their 4 string with their Hampden XI, taking the next three championships. The Second Division was introduced in 1926, and again Queen’s Park donated the trophy. Soon after the Third Division was formed, this time Brigadier General HA Jones offering the championship trophy. Since WWII, other divisions were formed as follows

·         Fourth Division 1948-1988 (donated by Robert Espie of C&W FC)

·         Fifth Division 1963-1990 (donated by James W Allan) This trophy had originally been both the League Cup and Third Division Consolation Cup

·         Sixth Division 1966-1989 (donated by James Brown)

·         Seventh Division 1971-1989 (donated by Eaglesham)

·         Eighth Division 1982-1988

Up until WWII, the league featured clubs from Glasgow to Edinburgh, but since the 1940s, member clubs have mostly been from the west of Lanarkshire, the eastern clubs competing in their own leagues. This shift has meant that a number of clubs from the more remote areas have been able to join, notably from Argyll, at its peak in the 1980s, the league operated eight divisions. Since 1990, after a radical reorganization, the top section has been a three-tiered Premier Division.
