Stewartry League overview

Southern Counties League

The Kirkcudbrightshire based Stewartry League was formed in 1894-95 with the winners being awarded the St Cuthbert's Cup. St Cuthbert Wanderers, Barholm Rovers, 6th Galloway Rifle Volunteers, Vale of Fleet and Douglas Wanderers all competed while although the Dumfries club Maxwelltown Thistle had expressed an interest the costs incurred by the traveling they needed to do was prohibitive. Due to a harsh winter the first competition was unfinished, but the league ran for another two seasons albeit with only three clubs.

After the Stewartry League disbanded, the three members joined with the seven other top sides in the Dumfries & Galloway region to form the Southern Counties League.
