WHY FIGHT
CREATIONISM?
This is a serious issue
because it imperils Christianity's witness to Truth. By lying Creationists side with the
Kingdom of Lies.
WHAT IS
EVOLUTION ?
AREN'T YOU A CHRISTIAN? SO
WHY ARE YOU FIGHTING CREATIONISM?
Because Creationism
betrays the Truth, and Jesus is that Truth. Creationism is built on falsehood, ignorance
and misinformation.
THESE SHOULD BE CLEAR SIGNS THAT CREATIONISM ISN'T OF GOD
YOUNG EARTH CREATIONISM FREQUENTLY
ARGUES AGAINST EVOLUTION ON THE BASIS THAT IT ISN'T SCIENTIFIC AND IS THE PRODUCT OF
PAGANISM OR POLITICAL IDEOLOGIES. WHAT'S THE REAL HISTORY OF EVOLUTION'S DISCOVERY?
The claim that God has created this
Universe in a six day period some six to ten thousand years ago and left abundant signs of
this event and the Biblical Flood is a testable hypothesis, and one that was abandoned by
scientists over the period 1750 to 1830. The processes at work in today's world and
conceivable processes that have left traces visible today [e.g. meteorite craters,
glaciers] seemed enough to create this world's physical features. The Hand Of God was
either present in all things, and so indistinguishable from Nature, or totally absent
except at the very fringe of the World [e.g. the Beginning, what we call the Big Bang.]
As geologists studied the fossils in the
early 1800s and naturalists collected more and more species of plants and animals from
around the world certain lines of evidence began suggesting that life had evolved.
Firstly, the fossils showed a multitude of animals and plants had once lived upon the
Earth and yet lived no longer. This is EXTINCTION.
Many naturalists couldn't accept this and
proposed that species had transformed over time, changing to suit their environments.
Evolution, according these naturalists, was an orderly process which arose from within
organisms. Lamarck was one of the first to propose this form of evolution and he was
followed by others who examined organisms and found them to have very similar body plans.
Baron Cuvier was one of the 19th Century's
greatest anatomists and he showed that not all organisms were alike, as the others
believed. His work proved extinction to be a real process in the world. Von Baer, an
embryologist, showed that there were four basic kinds of organisms amongst those known at
the time.
A second line of evidence from the fossils
showed that the kinds of living things had changed over time, with greater numbers of
modern forms existing in more recent strata. Using this fact Charles Lyell estimated that
the Cretaceous had finished some 80 million years ago, which is very close to the modern
radioactive dating measurement. He studied the proportions of modern to extinct forms
amongst shell-forming molluscs through the successive ages of the Cenozoic [the most
modern era] and used this pattern of change to guess at how long it all might have taken.
Similar patterns of appearance and disappearance existed all through out the fossils,
leading many to ask "how did species arise?" Mere transformation from one to
another wasn't enough, as species not only changed but they also diversified. This fact of
the "Tree of Life" was well known by the 1840s - 1850s, and it led Darwin to
finally publish his theories on evolution's causes.
Another line of evidence for evolution came
from study of living things. The abundance of species, often unique to where they lived,
caused many to seriously question whether God had created them all as diverse and as well
adapted to their habitats in the Beginning. The World had changed and many found it
difficult to believe that God's creatures could have all migrated from Noah's Ark merely
4500 to 5000 years ago. As more unique and bizarre lifeforms became known this simple view
became very unlikely. By the late 1700s most naturalists were sceptical of the Biblical
picture, and as geology dug up ever weirder creatures and extinct forms that resembled
their living relatives and lived in similar places, the "Flood Dispersal" theory
disappeared.
What remained was biogeography, and this
very quickly came to accept the evidence as being in favour of evolution. The question
which puzzled all scientists was the mechanism of evolution, not whether it had occurred
or not.
Newton's laws had inspired generations of
scientists to believe that Nature followed orderly laws which gave rise to phenomena in a
predictable, orderly fashion. The order and intricacy of Life seemed the very opposite of
random which is why many found God to be a plausible cause of that Order. When Darwin
proposed that the creative process was the natural selection of advantageous forms created
by normal "random variation" many scientists found it repugnant. Surely Life's
complexity hadn't arisen out of random processes, they thought, and from the 1860s to the
1920s most evolutionists were not Darwinists.
