VIROLOGY & EPIDEMIOLOGY: NEWS, INFO, AND MORE!

Hey, ya'll. Welcome to Heather Guffey's Epidemiology Homepage. Just a few short years ago, it looked as though malaria would be eradicted from the face of the earth; it still plagues many parts of the world. A cure for the simple common cold has yet to be found. True, we have found cures for so many diseases and invented wonderful vaccines for others, but even with all of our advanced scientific knowledge, discoveries, and inventions, nature and all of her undiscovered secrets seems to be one step ahead of us.

It is my belief that in our "Cleanliness Crusade" to wipe out disease once and for all, we have created an environment in which viruses and bacteria are attracted to us rather than repelled- just as insects are drawn to the light on a hot, dark, summer night.

For those of you who are familiar with H.G. Wells "War of the Worlds", recall the Martians' only weakness- they had never been exposed to earthly bacteria or disease. This seemingly simple flaw proved to also be a fatal one, and was probably the sole reason for the earthlings' victory. Does this help support my theory?

Perhaps, in our fight to eradicate disease, we should consider a new strategy. Or maybe, we could learn that sickness is sometimes inevitable. Perhaps, while we're sterilizing our dishes in boiling bleach water or scrubbing our hands until they become red and raw, we will remember that life-no matter how small, how miniscule, how insignificant- has the same will to survive as you and I, and that no matter how hard we might try to make it go away, hide or disappear, it will do everything in its power to survive. Think about it...Do you really believe that our "Crusade for Cleanliness" is in the best interest of the health of the intire human race or should we possibly rethink our strategy.
