Charlie's Blog #20: Israel and Palestine (sigh)

Israel and Palestine (sigh)

Israel and Palestine… I just about don’t care anymore. I do still support our efforts at making peace between them, the “Road map” and all that, but just barely do I support it. I am on the fence between supporting peace efforts and saying, “Fine. Let them all kill each other and take care of the mess that way.” It may sound cold, but I’ve just about had it with those two.

Actually, after September 11th, when they took advantage of our preoccupation in Afghanistan with Al Quaeda and the Taliban to go at each other, my attitude was “Fine, let them all kill each other if they want to so much.” Decades of work for peace seemed so fragile and so futile. I’ve since returned to my usual attitude of supporting peace making efforts between them, but as I said, just barely.

Of course I’d care more if I was personally involved, but I’m not. I certainly do understand that any American with relatives on either side will still care very much about the situation. “Very much” is of course an understatement. Case in point, my wife is from China. So I care very much about the state of U.S. / Chinese affairs. I now have family and friends in China. I’m personally involved. But I’m glad I’m not likewise personally involved with Israel or Palestine -- it would be truly gut wrenching.

However, neither Israel or Palestine should now expect to get much sympathy at all from any American not personally involved. It’s much too late for that.

This attitude of mine is especially significant coming from me. Every personality test I’ve ever taken ends up determining that I’m a “peacemaker”. But I’ve just about had it with those two.
