Kurt A. Sanftleben was commissioned
as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Medical Service Corps
in 1974 as a Distinguished Military Graduate from Michigan State University.
He holds a Doctorate of Education from the College of William and Mary
in Virginia and has completed extensive graduate work in Business Administration
and the Humanities. He has earned a professional postgraduate teaching
certificate from the Commonwealth of Virginia.

A graduate of the National Defense
University's National Security Management Program, Dr. Sanftleben's military
education also included the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College,
the Army Logistics Management College's Executive Development Course, the
U.S. Army Medical Materiel Agency's Materiel Management Course, and the
Army Medical Department Officers' Basic and Advanced Courses.

Dr. Sanftleben retired from
active duty in 1994 as a Lieutenant Colonel following a tour as an Assistant
Professor in the Department of Military and Emergency Medicine at the Uniformed
Services University of the Health Sciences. His other military assignments
included staff service at the U.S. Atlantic Command, the Army’s III Corps,
and Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He served in a full range of medical
and multi-functional logistics leadership and command positions within
the 2nd Armored Division, the 3rd Infantry
Division, and the 7th Infantry Division.

Dr. Sanftleben’s military decorations
and awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service, and
Meritorious Service Medals, as well as the coveted Expert Field Medical
Badge.

Upon retiring from active duty,
Dr. Sanftleben served as the Deputy Director of Commonwealth
ChalleNGe, where he was instrumental in establishing Virginia’s
first residential high school dropout recovery program. He is now the Director
of the Marine Corps Research Center and a part-time consultant specializing
in higher education, curriculum development, logistics management, and
military and disaster medicine.

Dr. Sanftleben lives in Virginia
Beach, Virginia, with his wife, Gail, who is the Deputy for Materiel Management
at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, and his daughter Amy, who is a student
in the International Baccalaureate Program at Princess Anne High School.
