Unicor is the trade name for Federal Prison Industries, a profitable part of the BOP and the Department of Justice. Unicor has been satisfying Federal customers since 1934, as a direct vendor and as a partner with other Federal agencies. Similarly, Unicor has been providing Federal inmates with a means for improving lives and morale while incarcerated. Often referred to as "Uni-Whore," Unicor, provides inmates with the ability to pay a little each month towards the financial restitutions obliged to them by the sentencing courts. The quality of their work has been guaranteed as "Escape Proof," which to many observers, is an insensitive and tasteless reference to, and at the expense of, inmate labor.
