"It is I. Do not be afraid."

On the night before the discourse, the twelve disciples were crossing the Sea of Galilee in rough weather when they saw someone walking on the water toward their boat. They were afraid, but Jesus called out, "It is I. Do not be afraid" (John 6:16-21).

His own disciples, his friends, failed to perceive him. They did not recognize Him. Appearances had deceived them. It had been Jesus all along. "It is I," he said, "Do not be afraid."
Perhaps Jesus would say the same words today to his friends and disciples who do not recognize his presence in Holy Communion. "It is I. Do not be afraid."
