John B. Gunn
JOHN B. GUNN was the first born child of Freeman James and Maria Bridgforth Gunn.  He was born between 1828 and 1829 in Brunswick County, Virginia and died after 1880 in Brunswick County, Virginia.   (per census records)

On January 12, 1853 in Lunenburg County, Virginia, John B. Gunn married Lucy Jane Elmore. She was the daughter of James W. Elmore, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Pritchett Elmore.  Lucy Jane Elmore was born in 1830 in Brunswick County, and died in 1901 in Brunswick County, Virginia.

John's two brothers, Samuel Harrison Gunn and Richard James Gunn married Lucy Ann Elmore and Mary Augusta Elmore (respectively), daughter of James W. Elmore, Jr.  and Martha Barnes.  Lucy Ann and Mary Augusta were nieces of Lucy Jane Elmore.

The relationships between these Gunn men and their Elmore wives were, indeed, very close.  I hope I haven't confused the readers too much.

John B. Gunn enlisted in the Confederate States of America forces in the War Between the States. He was a member of the 41st Virginia Infantry, Company B., which conscripted from the Virginia State militia from Dinwiddie County, Virginia in March of 1862. On June 30th, 1862 just under three months after enlistment, John was wounded at Glendale. He served on special detail as Provost Guard in Anderson's Division from January 1863 through April 1863.

On June 1st, 1863 he was taken prisoner of war, at the Battle of Cold Harbor, east of Richmond. From there he was taken to Point Lookout prison, where suffering from scurvy, he was exchanged on March 11, 1865, just short of the surrender on April 9, 1865 in Appomattox, Virginia.
