"MacGyverisms"

"Thanks for all
the free tubes!"

There was one thing that used to really tick me off. I would be riding along a beautiful country road and there, hanging from a sign, or littering the ground, spoiling the peaceful scenery, would be a bicycle tube that some slob was too lazy to fold up and carry away with him. After all, I was a bicyclist, so in a way, it made me look bad too.

I say used to, because some time go, I realized something which made me change my attitude (somewhat) about these people.

What I realized was that most of these abandoned tubes were not cheap merchandise! Many of them were the expensive, featherweight models. Presta valves and all. O.K. this did point a finger at the culprits. But that's not all, it also gave me an idea.

You see, not only were these quality tubes, but, except for the hole that caused the flat they were almost brand new! So I took to stopping, picking them up, and carrying them off myself.

This was not altogether altruistic. You see, when I reached the next rest stop, I would take out my patch kit and, with the help of a twenty-five cent patch, I soon had a five dollar spare tube!

So, If you're one of those guys who leave your flats littering the side of the road, I'd like to take this moment to say , "Thanks, guys. You've saved me a bundle!"
