Notes for Green Berry Greer:

Was taken from the Benton County Goodspeed.

Green B. Greer, Clerk and Master of Benton County Chancery Court, and a native of the county, was born Jan. 21, 1840, son of Hezekiah and Mary (Wyatt) Greer, natives of Tennessee. Our subject's grandfather, James Greer came to Benton County, TN., with his family about 1816 or 1818, and here Hezekiah grew to manhood, married and reared a family of seven children. He followed farming successfully in his day, principally in Benton County, although he lived for a short time in Henry and Carroll counties. Hezekiah Greer died March 1862, in his fifty-seventh year.

Green B. Greer, was reared and educated in this county, spending his early days on the farm. During the great Civil War he enlisted in Oct. 1861, in Co. G. Fifty-fifth Confederate Tenn Infamry, serving first as a non-commissioned officer, and after the reorganization was elected first lieutenant of his company He served in this capacity until wounded in the left leg at Atlanta, and was not again able to enter the service. During service he was captured at Island 10 and held a prisoner of war five months in norther prisons. After the war he followed teaching and farming in the Sixth District (his home) until January 1871, when he accepted the position of Clerk and Master of the Chancery Court under Chancellor Nixon. He served long and faithfully in this most important office, which he was still holding when (Goodspeed) went to press. Mr Greer was a long time Democrat in politics, and as such began his public career in August 1870, by making the race for county court clerk but was defeated by a small majority, along with eight other aspirants to the office.

On Sept. 12, 1866 he married Elizabeth McGill, who died Jan. 15, 1873, leaving three children: Jesse H., Robert S., and Lena. By his second marriage with Ada Haley in 1876, he had three children: Alma, Clarice and Nixon. Mrs. Greer died Sept. 2, 1884, and in 1885 Mr. Greer married Mary S. Haley.

He was a Mason, a member of the Agricultural Wheel of this State. He and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. He was one of Benton County's most enterprising men and an efficient and trustworthy public official.

Funny story about the picture! When I first got started into researching the

Haley's in Benton County, Jim and I went down to the library and courthouse

one day. We went into the County Court Clerks office and there was this

picture of all the pass clerks. The picture of Richard P. Haley was to recent

of a photo to have been him so we left it at that. Sometime later we went

back to take another look at the picture. The picture was no longer on the

wall. The clerk there said, that after the election the former clerk decided

to take the picture because he was mad that he lost his job. I haven't been

back to the courthouse in awhile to see if it had been returned. Next time,

we make the trip, I will make a point to stop and see if it's back.

Noah Stricklen (Strickland) have this day bargained and sold, anxious to favor the Christian religion and the advancement of

literature have this day given, granted and do hereby transfer and convey to James H. Bridges, James Cowell and Charles

Williams, trustee of Chapel Hill church and their successors in office for the benefit of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South,

for a place of worship and also for the benefit of the neighborhood adjacent thereto for a schoolhouse a certain tract or parcel

of land in Benton County, Tennessee in Range 7 and Section 4 and in civil district No. 5, containing by estimation one acre and

three fourths & 8 poles and bounden as follows, to wit: Beginning at a stake with three red oak pointers standing 34 poles south

of the NW corner of entry No. 924 for 147 acres and runs east 18 poles to a stake with post to a stake with black jack & post

revert back to me and my heirs but otherwise I convenant with said commissioners or trustees that I am lawfully seized of said

representatives to warrant and defend the title to said land to the aforesaid trustees and their successors in office for the purpose

above mentioned so long as said church exist on said premises but no longer, this 6th day of December 1855.

Noah Strickland, his mark X /32

Strickland swore to this document on February 16, 1856 but it was registered on March 28, 1860, only a few days before his

wife's death from tuberculosis of the lungs./33 To satisfy and honor his wife's request that the church seat be renamed Cowell's

Chapel for her people, he used his influence to make this a reality. Thus Chapel Hill became Cowell's Chapel by name shortly

before 1860./34

Years later, the burial yard was expanding at such a gradual but definite pace, that Green B. and Mollie Greer, active members

of the congregation, donated an half-acre to the church, on its north boundary, which put the Chapel tract hard against the

Lexington road. This gift was made on November 6, 1893 by the Greers./35

The old meeting house and school had become somewhat derelict and complaints about its lack of adequate heating kept some

of the membership dissatisfied in the cold months. In 1888, the congregation resolved to build a new church-house. The local

newspaper, the BENTON COUNTY ENTERPRISE, reported in its August 16, 1888 issue:

The new church building at Cowell's Chapel is nearing completion rapidly, and will

be a good substantial building when finished.

This "substantial building" was an attractive rectangular structure, a white frame house, lighted with large side windows. In

1916, the building was extended slightly and several of the side windows were planked over. The pulpit was also moved from

the east end of the building to the front or west side, where two doors were cut between the four high, narrow windows. to

help pay for these and other incidental repairs, several of the young people gave a play, "Hazel Adams", at the Chapel on

Saturday night, March 18, 1916. Several days later it was presented at Holladay. There were good turnouts for these

performances./36
