    Quick Facts:

-An incorporated church in Denton, Texas for 19 years, 4 months shy of its 20th anniversary.

-Originally founded as a Sunday morning Bible study in wake of a large schism in Denton County's oldest church, First United Methodist Church of Denton. Founders believed the new pastor was preaching anti-biblical ideals and socialism from the pulpit. Reportedly, more than 100 members left, who later comprised the EMC church and Trinity United Methodist Church in the early '80s.

-A part of two denominations, the Southern Methodist Church and later The Evangelical Methodist Church, and was briefly independent.

-Two churches and two Bible studies spun-off from the church: Gateway Church, a merger of a Gateway United Baptist Church and Bell Avenue Independent Methodist Church (split from University EMC), the late Living Water Fellowship in 2001 which is a mission of the EMC intended as a replacement for the church, a Bible study at the home of David and Diana Johnson, and a Bible study which continues among students at the University of North Texas and members of the Denton community.

-Founded a chapter of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship at the University of North Texas in the mid '80s.

Former church administrator David Johnson may be reached at dndjbrit@aol.com.

Other members displaced by church politics have organized a Bible study and prayer group modeled after John Wesley's socieites. e-mail Andy Hogue at creton4[at]yahoo.com for more information and current location.

The old building on Maple and Welch (formerly the home of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church) was purchased from New Creation Fellowship by University of North Texas and demolished to make room for a fraternity house. Op-ed column on the demolition.

The building at 2216 N. Bolivar is currently the meeting place of Church on the Go, and independent church, and has since undergone major interior restoration. It is under the care of Dalton Allen, owner of Wellspring Christian Academy.

Former pastors include: David Troupe (2000-01), Dr. Charles Mulholland ('90s), Dr. Charles Rodolico (late '80s), and Lloyd Vance (early '80s).

Could University EMC's demise have stopped more "reverse mission" church restarts from destroying congregations? Judge for yourself. Archived document.
