Chapter three – getting close

“I’m sorry, I thought you were someone else.” Brian apologized, he turned around and continued his search, not being able to find her anywhere he thought of maybe paging her but decided to save her the embarrassment and just wander around calling her name until she heard him. He snickered as he walked around aimlessly, wandering if he ever did this to his mother as a kid. He turned the isle and came face to face with a herd of teenage girls. They saw him and immediately started screaming and running towards him. He high-tailed it the other direction, his sneakers squeaking on the floor, he ducked into a clothing rack shaped in a circled and hid in the clothes. The girls were fooled and ran off in search of their idol. Brian laughed at what a close call that was. He felt a tap on his shoulder and turned around hoping it wasn’t one of the escaped fans, he gave in a sigh of relief when he saw it was Naomi, the person he had been looking for all along. She kept a smug smile on her face as she pulled him from the clothes rack by his ear like a mother would do to their child. He got his ear loose and pulled her over to a tall shelf in the deserted department store. He smiled as he leaned closer to her; she leaned back against the shelf, there lips brushed before they connected the gap. Lavishing in the feel of her hair as his hands roamed around in her long golden locks. They pulled apart and he whispered in her ear ‘I love you.’

Brian shot straight up in bed, sweat dripping down his forehead. What was he doing? He couldn’t be having those dreams. Naomi? No. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and looked over at the clock. 3:11, he sighed heavily and fell back onto the waterbed. He looked over to his right, Leighanne was still in the hospital; which was where he had stayed for the past week but finally gave into the doctors, nurses and even Naomi’s pleas for him to go home and get some rest. He looked terrible, felt worse, and there were no signs that Leighanne would wake up from the deadly coma she was in. yes, a coma. He still couldn’t believe it; she was so strong, healthy. A coma? It just didn’t seem real. Everything the past week seemed like a dream. She was awake one minute, he went out of the room to get a coke, when he came back there were people rushing around her, hooking her up to machines, loud shrieks form the machines around were all he could hear as he broke down and cried. Naomi hadn’t been there, Leigh’s parents had went home to Georgia seeing how there was nothing anyone could do for Leigh and she would be getting out of the hospital in a few weeks. She had a few scratches, and broken arm, and a hairline fracture in her leg, she had a light concussion and a really messed up eye, her hair had been all tangled from the throw in the accident, they couldn’t get it untangled so they were forced to cut it off short, now it fell an inch above her shoulders. Brian wasn’t sure what to do, he had been having more and more dreams and thoughts about Naomi and still fell apart every time he walked into Leighanne’s room, seeing her almost lifeless body laying there.

He had came home to get some sleep and stayed awake for more than three hours before dosing off, until he had that dream and woke up again. He had taken some sleeping pills but they didn’t do anything but calm his nerves a little and now he was wired up again. He looked around the room, he saw the curtains being blown into the room from the open window and got up to shut it, there’s no telling how long it had been open. He closed the window and turned back around to face his room, he sighed heavily; the dream still running through his mind. He needed to talk to someone but had no one to talk to, he had been driving his parents up the wall calling them, and all his fellow band mates, excluding Nick were all on their vacations, either in New York, or Cali, or even Spain. Kevin had went home Kentucky, which is where Brian would rather be but he knew that if he left Florida and Leigh than surely something would happen, mostly likely something bad, and he wouldn’t be there. So he stayed there, in the house, by himself; well, not technically by himself, he had the dogs, tyke, and litty, but there weren’t really shoulders to cry on, or comforters. He had thought, many times, of calling Naomi and talking to her, but with these dreams he had been having he wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to be getting so close to her anymore. He was slowly shying away from her, even though he knew he was hurting her feelings by being so distant, it was the only thing he knew to do.

Brian looked over at the phone, once again thinking of calling her. ‘She did say I could call at anytime, day or night’ he tossed the thought over in his head. He walked downstairs and into the kitchen, he grabbed a glass from the cupboard and pored himself a glass of milk, sitting on a stool at the island in the middle of the classically styled kitchen he looked down over to Litty sitting on the floor by an empty food bowl. Brian sighed once again and got up to fill their bowl with puppy chow and get them some water.
