Brigitte Bardot

French sex symbol and blonde bombshell Bardot was known to the world simply as BB. This was not only because of her initials but also because it sounded like the French word for 'baby.' Her appeal was that she was childlike yet lustful which was emphasised by her large kohl rimmed eyes and womanly figure. She embodied everything that people refer to as 'typically French.'

Males the world over fantasized about her while females attempted to reproduce every last detail of her hair and make-up. Her wild blonde hair (often worn in a ponytail) and pale pink lipstick were her trademark.  She helped to make flat shoes popular and is associated with gingham dresses.

Jacques Esterel designed a pink gingham wedding gown for her 1956 marriage to Jacques Charrier. The dress was much copied and caused a worldwide craze for gingham clothing.

Bardot liked to wear clothing from the Paris boutique 'Les Halles'.
