In 1939 the King and Queen of English visited North America from May 17 through June 17. During that time they traveled to Canada, to the United States and to Newfoundland, which was then not yet part of Canada.

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the late Queen Mother) paid a visit to Newfoundland on June 17, 1939 on their trip back to England. A 5c commemorative stamp was issued that day. Since the harbor at St. John's was not large enough for their ocean liner, the royal couple arrived at Holyrood and motored to St. John's.
