reminder of the past

 

Within this walled city lies a bittersweet reminder of the history of the Filipinos under different nations. Intramuros, is Philippine culture at its rawest. Each remaining infrastructure and ruin tells a story that reminds us of what Filipinos went through to provide our freedom and the freedom of future generations. Though it may impart painful memories for visitors, it unconsciously gives a sense of nationalism and honor for Filipinos and sense of respect towards the Philippines for the foreign visitors. It also provides a clearer sense of the truth of what really happened decades of years ago to clarify misconceptions about the Philippines’ history. It also serves as some form of answer as to why Filipinos are the way they are right now and how they came to be.

As Intramuros brings about a sense of nationalism, it also passes on the sense of belongingness to one nation. Even though our world has evolved into a modernized one, our history and culture as Filipinos, as mirrored by Intramuros, serves as the common denominator among Filipinos not only within the Philippines but also across countries around the world. As Intramuros mirrors history and  culture of the Philippines, it also emphasizes how Filipinos before united amidst and against the struggles and battles they faced being under different foreign governments and influences. Intramuros was and always will be part of the Philippine culture, history and being.
