Girl Scout Troop 63
Trails and Tales Fall 2001...
Mt. Scott
Our first stop was Mt. Scott at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife refuge.
The refuge area has 12 lakes, fishing, boating, buffalo, elk, and long
horn cattle. Mt. Scott is the highest point in the region at 2,464 ft. The girls had
a great time climbing on the rocks and taking in the view.
Meers
After a busy morning of climbing at Mt. Scott, we headed over
to Meers for a bite to eat. Meers is now a ghost town, but was once a thriving little community that sprang up in the gold rush days at the turn of the century. All that is left is a burger joint that serves huge burgers that are fabulous.
The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge Visitors Center
After lunch we stopped at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge Visitors Center. The Visitors Center had some hands-on activities and a 10 minute movie about the buffalo herd.
The Percussive Arts Society Museum
Our last stop was the Percussive Arts Society Museum. This museum displays unique percussion instruments from around the world. There are over 250 musical instruments from at least fifteen countries here.
Trying out the drums
The museum also had an area where the girls could try out all sorts of percussion instruments. They made some GREAT music.
