GERARD BUMANGLAG interviews Mario Zialcita a.k.a. DJ FLESHWOUNDS!

...

WHO IS DJ FLESHWOUNDS IN THE LOCAL GOTH COMMUNITY?

As Runeschadow has mentioned, I am considered as one of the legitimate goth-industrial DJs in the country. We are still looking for other DJs, preferably female, who can spin with us.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A GOTH-ORIENTED DJ NEXT TO DJ RUNESCHADOW? WHAT ARE YOUR INFLUENCES MUSIC-WISE?

Runeschadow and I have been talking a lot about our cd collections and our music. Eventually he asked me if I could spin alongside him at our gatherings. I was a bit hesitant at first but what the hell! He taught me how to use the equipment on my first night. We’ve been spinning together most times eversince.

I like gothrock, industrial, a bit of darkwave and darkmetal.

We have been discussing ways to introduce new sounds on top of what they are already familiar with to our beloved crowd.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING ON AT PRESENT?

Figuring out how to put on string-attached car seatcovers! Hahahaha! My wife and I are developing the FiveWoundsToEnter website. Its now available and has downloadable live demo mp3 sampler, but we still need to work more on it when time permits. Please visit www.fivewoundstoenter.cjb.net.

FIVE WOUNDS TO ENTER... LITERALLY?

Sam, our keyboardist, and I have been trying to come up with a name for the band. One night I had a dream and the name FiveWoundsToEnter popped in. We thought it sounds appropriate to our kind of music. Wounds depict pain and suffering. These are things everyone goes through in life no matter who or what you are. Thus the term “ToEnter”. Five is the number of wounds Christ had to endure on the cross to redeem us from our sins and sufferings. Somehow, what we suffer now has been lessened because of this. Yet we always find ourselves whining in pain. It’s a reminder that it could be worse without those five wounds.

WHAT LED TO THE FORMATION AND WHEN DID IT TAKE PLACE?

Long story really. The members we have now are not all in the original lineup. The band was formed by Sam and I. To read about our history, you may visit our official website at www.fivewoundstoenter.cjb.net

HOW DO YOU CLASSIFY YOUR SOUND AS A BAND?

Dark, heavy, passionate, romantic and melodic. Its hard to classify or define. Each member has his or her own influences and musical style. Sam likes classical and newwave. Joel is into progressive metal and Bjork. Malaine prefers triphop. Jon is more into gothrock and reggae. Francis likes newage/experimental and worldmusic. I’m into goth/industrial at the moment. However, Joel, Francis and I have been influenced by punk and thrash metal during our teen years.

WHAT INSTRUMENT/S DO YOU PLAY?

I play the drums for FiveWoundsToEnter.

DO YOU WRITE SONGS AS WELL?

Not really. I can’t compose music using specific chords. Recently, I wrote some lyrics entitled “Trouble For Lucy”. We will be working on the music for this after Francis’s composition.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOUR BAND, FIVE WOUNDS TO ENTER?

We play almost all of the gigs we are invited to provided it is scheduled on a Friday or Saturday, since all of the members have work or business or family to attend to.

We have been discussing plans for an album but no particular decisions are solid yet. Financing is a bit of a problem at the moment. Joel feels we are too old to be throwing away hardearned money on this but my wife wants to finance although if she does, the budget she will offer is very limited. One of her friends has offered to co-produce but she feels a bit awkward handling his money with the possibility of not being able to return his investment. All the financial considerations boil down to the big question all independently produced bands ask, “Will the crowd support our album release?”.

Marian has a concept for an independently produced video for “Respite From Madness” but we’re waiting for Joel’s dominatrix, Anjo, to come back from abroad with a digital video camera.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TOURING THE COUNTRY LIKE DOMINION?

As of now, our jobs, businesses, family and education are of top priority. Don’t get me wrong, our music comes a hairline close second. If we are ever offered an oppurtunity to tour the country, we would do it, as long as there is no conflict with our schedules, and as long as organizer or sponsors handle the transportation and accommodation expenses. We are very eager to share our music to everyone everywhere, especially in our own native land. Please visit our website for more information: www.fivewoundstoenter.cjb.net.
