The Texas Raised-Intensive Method(tm.)
Here is a basic yard or garden. It's earth is completely compacted. Root growth is limited downward and weeds thrive in this typical enviroment.
In the Texas Raised-Intensive Method, the first 6 inches of soil are removed, then dried, de-weeded and used for later use in the compost pile.
Another 18 inches of soil are removed, broken into fine particles (un-compacted), mixed with finished compost and then returned into the bed. The obvious rising or "fluff"of the soil shows how compacted it was in it's pre-dug condition. It will stay risen, if it is not re-compacted.
A 12 inch trench is then dug around the entire garden. This dirt is also mixed in to the garden. This trench holds all soil accumulation (to be re-deposited back into the garden at a later date), and during a rain, collects water run-off, not just from the garden but from the immediate surrounding area.
A heavy layer (1-2 inches) of newspaper is laid around the entire garden sides (Not top). Then another layer of mulch (hay, grass, leaves) is laid on top of the soil. It also prevents weeds from starting. The soil on top is then tilled lightly, while also forming a 3-4 inch gradual dam around the perimeter of the garden. This dam will prevent soil erosion and turns the garden into a mini-resevoir for water. After the mulch is in place and the dam is formed, heirloom vegetables and fruits are planted. The organic, delicious results of a Grow Good Foods Garden using the Texas Raised-Intensive Method are then secured for many, many seasons to come!
