do the dishes (housework)                 They shared jobs in the house: he did the vacuuming while she did the dishes.

do (something) by hand                     The computer was not working, so she did the           calculation by hand.

 

do without                                           I didn't have any money to buy meat when I lost my job so we had to do without a lot of things.

 

do the trick                                         I tried a lot of things to make the car perform better, but when I changed to better gas, that really did the trick.

 

do (something) on purpose                Tom ran into the lady when he was roller blading, but he didn't do it on purpose.

 

do one's heart good                            It really did Maria's heart good to see her brother happy again after so much sadness.

 

do a number (job) on                          My dog really did a job on my new shoes.  They'll never be the same.

 

do an about face                                 The president was against capital punishment but he did an about face and is for the death penalty now.

 

do a 180                                              We were driving to school when Jennifer discovered that she'd left her homework behind. We did a 180 and went home to get it and then we set off for school again.

 

do away with (something or someone)     The witness was going to testify against the criminal until the criminal did away with him.

 

do (someone) good                             Here have some hot tea, it will do your throat good.

 

do (one's) best                                    I did my best, but I still couldn't pass the course.

 

do justice to (something)                    This photograph doesn't do you justice.  You're much prettier than this.

 

do (someone) out of (something)       Phil is a house painter. When it rained on Monday and Tuesday, he was done out of two days' pay.
