last Sunday, where Miss Aldie was at work in a telephone office. Mr. McElroy is
at present engaged in the livery business here and is one of our leading young
men. Miss Aldie is the 17-year-old daughter of the lamented Dr. W.A. Duffey, and
is an amiable and beautiful young lady. The Leader joins with their many friends

Miss Willie Duffey died at the home of her mother, Mrs. Ada Duffey, in Emory,
Wednesday night about 10:30 o'clock after a long illness. Everything possible to
do had been done by physicians, loved one, and friends and including treatment
for several months in a West Texas sanitarium, but nothing could stay the hand
of the grim reaper, who carried her spirit away to its final resting place. Miss
WIllie was the youngest daughter of Dr. W.A. Duffey, who was still well known to
most of the older settlers of this vicinity. She was past 23 years of age,
having been born and reared in Emory, and the news of her death will come as
sorrow to her many friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist Church at 3:30 o'clock Thursday
evening by the pastor, Dr. M.T. Tucker of Greenville, where a large concourse of
friends and acquaintances gathered to pay their last tribute to her memory.
She is survived by her mother Mrs. Ada Duffey, one brother, Mr. S.C. Duffey and
five sisters, Mrs. E.V. Cooke, Mrs. P.W. Pearson, Mrs. J.W. McElroy, Mrs. Grover
Stuart and Miss Hankie Duffey, all of whom reside in this city. The Leader joins
with friends in offering sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.

sorrow to her many friends throughout the neighborhood. Funeral services were
conducted at the Baptist church at 3:30 o’clock Thursday evening by the pastor,
Dr. M.T. Tucker, of Greenville, where a large concourse of friends and
acquaintances gathered to pay their last tribute to her memory. The burial took
place at the City Cemetery at 4:30 o’clock. She is survived by her mother Mrs.
Ada Duffey, and five sisters, Mrs. E.V. Cooke, Mrs. P.W. Pearson, Mrs. J.W.
McElroy, Mrs. Grover Stuart, and Miss Hankie Duffey, all who reside in this
city. The Leader joins with friends in offering sincere sympathy to the bereaved

Frank J. Duffey
- obit January 14, 1939, the death angel caalled Frank J. Duffey, six miles west
of Sulphur Springs, Texas. He was born March 13, 1889, in Camp Co., Texas, near
Pittsburg. He later moved to Upshur Co., Dec. 2, 1900. He was united in marriage
to Miss Minnie Lawrence and to this union seven children were born. They moved
to Hopkins County in 1930. He lived more of his life in Wood and Upshur
counties. His death was a shock to his family and friends. He had been sick a
short time, seven days, with pneumonia. Mr. Duffey leaves to mourn his death,
his loving wife, seven children and a brother. Miss Jessie Duffey and Glenn
Duffey were living at home at the time of his death. William Duffey married and
was living near him. Lawrence Duffey lives near Gilmer, Texas. Mrs. Wilma
Duffey, Gilmer; Miss Grace Duffey, Grand Saline; Mrs. Aline Morish, Palavais,
Texas. A host of other relatives also survive. He was laid to rest at
Perryville, Wood County, Texas. Rev. Hollingsworth of Winfield conducted the
funeral service. By Mr. and Mrs. Edd Thompson.

Pearson Passes Away Early Friday Morning
Despite all
efforts of medical skill and loving attention from relatives and friends, Mrs.
Ruby Ellen, wife of Dr. P.W. Pearson, passed on from this life to here eternal
reward at 5 o'clock last Friday morning an illness of bronchial pneumonia. Mrs.
Pearson was born in Emory and lived here all her life, being 47 years of age.
She was a daughter of Dr. W.A. Duffey, deceased and Mrs. Ada Duffey. In the year
of 1908 she was married to Dr. P.W. Pearson and to this union four children were
born, Ruth, Marjorie, Louise and P.W. Jr. Mrs. Pearson was a member of the
Baptist church, a loving, kind companion and mother. Funeral services were held
at 5 o'clock Friday afternoon at the First Baptist church, conducted by Rev. G.C.
Hardy, burial following in the City Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Joe Hood, Louis
Cain, Judge O.H. Rodes, J.N. Braziel, Earl Hill and D.L. Nabors. An attest to
her standing among neighbors and friends was the large crowd that went to the
church to pay their last respects, which taxed the capacity of the building and
the floral offering, which filled one end of the church. Besides her own family,
she is survived by her mother, Mrs. Ada Duffey and four sisters, Mrs. Ed Cooke,
and Mrs. Grover Stuart of Emory and Mrs. John W. McElroy and Miss Hankie Duffey
of Greenville. The Leader would like to join with the family's many friends in
offering sincere sympathy to the sadly bereaved family in the loss of the most
beloved member of the family ---Mother.

News of the
sudden death was received with shock by the citizens of Emory when the word went
ou that Cecil Duffey died, having passed away about 3 a.m. Friends could not
comprehend for the moment how a strong, middle-aged man, a neighbor could weaken
and die within a few weeks, but of such is life. Cecil,a s everyone knew him,
had passed his 44th birthday the past March, was a native of Rains County and of
Emory and had spent his life among us. He was the only son of Dr. W.A. Duffey
and wife, enjoyed a large circle of friends and acquaintances, who are left to
mourn his sudden taking away. Funeral services were conducted at 4:15 Friday
afternoon at the First Baptist Church by Pastor edgar Hurst, assisted by Rev.
Hardy, pastor of the local Methodist church, in the presence of an overflowing
congregation of relatives, friends, and acquaintances. The floral offering was
beautiful. Pallbearers were: Henry Adams, Bruce Adams, Jim Settle, O.H. Rodes,
H.D. Garrett, and E.M. Mason.
The deceased is
survived by his wife and two sons: Philip and Eugene; his mother, Mrs. W.A.
Duffey; five sisters, Mesdames Ed V. Cooke, P.W. Pearson and Grover Stuart, and
Miss Hanky Duffey and Mrs. J.W. McElroy of Greenville who has the sincere

DECATUR -- Agnes Duffey Brown, 90, a Wise County district clerk for over 30
years, died Sunday at a nursing center.
Funeral: 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Decatur. Burial: Oaklawn
Cemetery. Visitation: 7 to 8 tonight at Coker Funeral Home.
Agnes Duffey Brown was born to Claude Walter Duffey and his wife, Josie Chisum
Duffey, on Dec. 22, 1905, in Marysville, Cooke County, Texas, being the first of
six children. She moved to Tahoka, Texas, with her parents about 1923 and
graduated from Tahoka High School in 1924. After graduation she attended Decatur
Baptist Junior College in Decatur, Texas, and subsequently received a teaching
certificate and taught in a rural school in Wise County. On May 6, 1928, she
married Jennings Crisp Brown, then a young lawyer in Decatur. Judge Jennings
Brown preceded her in death on March 24, 1951. Agnes Brown was appointed
district clerk of Wise County, Texas, on Dec. 1, 1951, and served unopposed for
over 30 years, retiring on Dec. 31, 1982.
Survivors: Sister, Thelma Duffey Turner of Lovington, N.M.; two sons, Thomas
Jennings Brown and his wife, Linda, of Decatur, and Claude Duffey Brown of Fort
Worth; four grandchildren, Thomas Anthony Brown and his wife, Kim Brown, of
Watauga, Shelby Brown Ivy and her husband, Richard Ivy, of Denton, Karen
Elizabeth Wolf and her husband, Dr. Robert E. Wolf, of Louisville, Ky., and
Kathryn Brown Wilson and her husband, Dr. Matthew B. Wilson, of Little Rock,
Ark.; four great- grandchildren, William Hunter Wolf, age 5, Grayson Scott Wolf,
age 3, and Robert Chase Wolfe, age 10 months, all of Louisville, and Christopher

Killed In Auto Accident

Joe Porter
Barnett, born in Canton, Texas, March 4, 1906, died Dec. 31, 1932, of injuries
received in an automobile accident on the Houston-Galveston highway near Texas
City. The remains were brought here for burial and after services in the chapel
of the Palacios Funeral Home Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Carroll B. Ray
of the First Baptist Church, interment was made in the Palacios Cemetery, under
the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home.
The deceased
was married to Miss Alien Duffy, on March 14, 1923 and to this union five
children were born. He is survived by his wife and four children, Faye Marie,
Billy Wayne, Joe Donald and Margaret Ann, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.R.
Barnett, of this city; one sister, Mrs. Florence Shannon, of Houston, two
brothers, Lee Barnett, of Canton, Texas, and Guy Barnett, of this city.

Two Men Perish
as Car Overturns on Houston Road Near La Marque
Two men were
killed shortly before midnight Saturday when the car in which they were driving
to Houston struck a concrete culvert a short distance north of the Texas City
cutoff and overturned in two feet of water beside the road. James Robert
Sanders, 26, employee of the Southern Pacific Railroad in Galveston, and Joe P.
Barnett, 30, of Palacios, were the victims of the wreck.
They were
found by A. L. Bogato of La Marque, who was notified by a passing motorist that
a car lay in the ditch with its lights burning. On investigation , Sanders
found pinned beneath the car, apparently drowned as no bones were broken, while
the inquest held by Justice of the Peace J. M. Coats of Texas City revealed
that Barnett's neck had been broken by the impact. The bodies were taken by
Bogato to Texas City, but medical examination disclosed that both men had been
dead for as much as half an hour.
Blinded by
Lights
Sanders is
survived by his mother, Mrs. Ada Ratliff of Galveston, a brother Earl Sanders,
also of Galveston and a sister, Mrs. Ada Bell Sanders of Houston. His body will
be sent to North Zulch, Tex., early Tuesday for burial by a Texas City
undertaking company.
Barnett is
survived by his wife and three small children and two brothers all of Palacios.
His body was sent home for burial late yesterday.
Highway
Officer George Defferari, who investigated the accident said that indications at
the scene pointed to a mechanical accident of some sort, possibly blinding
lights of an approaching car which forced the driver over on to a rough shoulder
causing him to loose control.

Hiram Lamar
Duffey died on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, in Houston. He was born in Gilmer, Texas,
on Nov. 12, 1927. Lamar attended school in Gilmer and later at the University of
Houston. Lamar was preceded in death by his mother, Lauris Odom, and father,
Hiram Lawrence Duffey. He was a longtime member of Congregation Beth Israel.
Lamar is survived by his devoted wife, Josephine Mesiroff Duffey, and his sons,
Walton Duffey of Philadelphia, Harry Duffey and wife, Stephanie, of Houston, and
Hiram Duffey of San Diego, Calif. He also is survived by his beloved
grandchildren, Connor, Reagan and Morgan Duffey, Laura Stanton, and
great-grandchildren, Jack, Miles and Elam Stanton, and by devoted family friend,
Sandy Tyrrell. Funeral services were held at Beth Israel Memorial Gardens;
Rabbi Adrienne Scott officiated. Contributions in memory of Lamar may be made to

He was a senior at Palacios High School. Survivors: sister, Tiffany Starr Perez
of Palacios; brother, Robert "Bobby" Perez Jr. of Palacios; and grandparents,
Refugio and Janie Garcia Orozco and C.L. "Sam" Tolleson, all of Palacios, and
Margaret Barnett Hassell of Victoria. Preceded in death by: grandfather, Joe A.
Perez. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Sunday at Artero Memorial Chapels. The
family will receive visitors 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home chapel. A
prayer service will be 7 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Services will be 11 a.m.
Monday at First Baptist Church in Palacios. Burial will be at Palacios Cemetery.
