Hike Hawaii 2002 | ||||||||||||
Waipio to Waimanu Expedition January 19-21, 2002 This hike takes on the proportions of an expedition. We'll be going for three days and two nights a total of 19 miles across some of the most beautiful yet trying of trails in Hawaii. The Muliwai trail dips into Waipio valley along a steep paved road that is only for 4WD, crosses Waipio stream and beach, and then takes us 1500 feet skyward across a dozen rain-forest valleys until we reach hidden Waimanu. We set camp on Waimanu beach for two nights, so that we might have the opportunity to play in the ocean or venture up to the Waikaili`ili tandem waterfalls. Waimanu valley was once the summer enclave of island kings and chiefs, thought immune to the ravages of drought that most other parts of the island expect. This may be the penultimate hike of Hawaii since it gives us the best views, both ocean and mountain, with chances to see things that most locals or tourists never experience ever. |
