Fifty-four

As they stepped into the cafeteria all eyes were on them. "Jess is back," whispers filled the room.

"Here we go."

"Jess!" A group of her friends ran to her and Aaron.

"Jess, are you okay? We were so worried." Jamie gave her a hug.

Jess nodded and hugged all of her friends. "I'll see you second period Jess." Aaron gently kissed her forehead as they parted ways. "Be strong."

"Aaron is she okay?" Jamie whispered once they were in homeroom.

"She's getting better and better everyday but don't expect to hear too much out of her."

"Does she talk to anyone at all?"

"Just me."

"Oh."

"Don't feel bad. Just don’t ask her any questions for a while. When she's ready, she'll talk."

"I know you won't tell me what happened Aaron but I've been hearing things."

"Like what?" Aaron looked almost terrified. "From who?"

Jamie leaned into Aaron's ear and whispered.

"Jamie... don't you dare tell a sole. NOBODY is going to say anything. I'm not going to let anybody make this worse than it already is. Who told you that?" Aaron's face was white as snow and he looked horrified.

"I know you didn't do anything Aaron."

"Where did you hear it?" Aaron looked pissed.

"Some girl was the hospital. People are talking about Jason missing too. I heard one of his friends say something about where he was the other day."

"Where is he?"

"His mother's or something. You should ask one of his buddies." Jamie pointed to a boy in the back corner of the room.

Aaron stood up and walked over to the kid. "Where is he?"

"What?"

"Where is Jason?" Aaron's voice was stern.

"He ran. He came to my house and said he needed a place to go. I didn't know what he did."

"WHERE IS HE?"

"My brother's place. In Georgia."

Aaron pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and after dialing and talking for a few seconds handed it to the kid. "Tell the police."

"But…"

"Do it."

When the kid had told the police everything he knew Aaron took his phone back and let in the people waiting to get in the classroom. "If you tell a sole you'll live to regret it."

"I didn't know Aaron. I'm sorry."

"Don't tell anyone."

"I won't I promise."

When Aaron stepped into the hall Jess was standing by the door waiting for him. "Jamie said…"

"They know where he is. They're going to get him."

Jess hugged Aaron and then quickly kissed him. "Thank you."
