Created from 10 & 12 gauge, cold roll steel, this rendition of a Red Rock Crab took 4 months to bring to life. It measures 6 feet across and weighs in at 149 lbs. It currently resides at the home of the sculptor.
The Red Rock Crab, a species indigenous to the California coast & Monterey Bay, has the ability to regenerate its pinchers or, claws, should one be lost in battle with a large fish, sea otter, seal, or another crab. Because of this extraordinary ability, local fishermen of the Monterey Bay have practiced the harvesting of the pinchers of these crabs for many generations. By only taking one pincher, leaving the crab one to eat and fight with, the crab soon begins to grow a replacement. Should the same crab be caught again the new, smaller pincher is allowed to grow to full size and the larger pincher is removed, hence always leaving the crab at least one good pincher. There is little meat to be found in the legs and body of the crab. It is more work than reward to extract the meat from the legs, hence little reason for the taking of the whole crab.
There are few renewable resources on this planet, however by observing this method of harvesting, one single female Red Rock Crab has the potential of propagating millions upon millions of her species when you consider the perpetuation of her offspring and the offspring of her offspring, and so on, and so on, and so on... Now, if we can just get use to eating lizzard tails.
