Nieves Escalada de la Peña (1920-1983)


Nieves Escalada was born in the Northern Spain Asturian coastal city of Gijon on June 2, 1920. She was the daughter of Juan Escalada, County Court Secretary of Sama de Langreo, and of Nati de la Peña Acebal. Her birth occured while her mother Nati was visiting her mother, Leonor Acebal, in Gijon. Nieves lived till the age of 21 in Sama de Langreo where she finished highschool. In 1941, her father Juan Escalada, was promoted to the Oviedo County Court Secrertary position and he moved with his family to the Asturian capital. In 1942 she married her first cousin José Manuel Castañón de la Peña.

Favored with a clear intelligence and a great sensibility, she achieved a profound humanistic knowledge.

In 1961, during the voluntary exile of her husband in Venezuela,which she shared with him with estoicism and braveness, she writes short stories of famous women that were transmitted once a week by a Caracas Radio Station.

She was an avid reader of literature and poetry, and writes also poems where she poured all her tenderness and passion, and reveals her inner nature.

Her poems were not known until after her death. She dies in Madrid in 1983.
