Ragtime music was selected for the ship information pages because it was popular during the time of the great immigration period and evokes the atmosphere of this era. Ragtime had its roots in a wide variety of earlier music and was created by itinerant performers of the post civil-war period. Our ancestors were leaving all that was familiar and embracing a new country and a new society. It seemed appropriate that the music played on these pages should be truly American and representative of the times. Wherever possible a musical piece was selected that was composed in the same year that our ancestor arrived in the United States.

Music Playing: "Chestnuts, Rag Medley" by Percy Wenrich (1906)
