The Island

PART 1

His quarters were locked, again. He wasn’t supposed to do that. It was against regulations, and if he were caught locking his doors he would be punished. Well he didn’t exactly lock them since none of the doors had locks on them. He always placed a chair in front of the door, beneath the handle so no one could open it.

The island was usually relatively safe, unless they got a mental case in the facility and the constant threat of the guards who liked to… abuse the citizens. The mental cases were always kept in lockup though and in constant supervision, though of course someone could escape them fairly easily since the guards weren’t too bright.

With a sigh, the visitor held the door handle and shook the door violently until the resident hurried over and removed the chair, fearing a guard or supervisor.

Kyo pushed his way into the room and stared at "the leader." It didn’t look right for him to be wearing the same blue clothes as the rest of the residents. The blue v-neck made him look very skinny and the pants sagged on him. It all made him look vaguely pathetic. His bare feet were flat on the ground and didn’t wobble a bit. He looked up at his blonde hair. At least they allowed them to dye their hair, with dye they could buy in the resident shop, but everyone was issued the same shampoo and conditioner, with no gels or sprays of any kind allowed making his vibrant hair flat and boring.

"What did you want, Kyo? I’m busy."

"Busy?" Kyo brushed past him gently and picked up the book from the chair. He looked at the cover. "How To Achieve Inner Peace." Kyo read and flipped through the pages, poorly dressed aerobics instructors demonstrated yoga techniques that would supposedly relax the body. He grimaced at how boring it must be. "I never thought I would miss novels until I got here. Good thing I didn’t read them more, like you. I would miss them even more. Well, you know the rule; no novels that could inspire revolutionary thoughts are allowed. I hate all this self healing shit."

The blonde snatched the book away. "What do you want, Kyo?" He snapped.

Kyo studied the pale face for a moment with a confused look. "I just came to visit… What’s wrong, Yoshiki? Why the bad mood?"

Yoshiki threw the book back on his bookshelf and crossed the room angrily to his floor-to-ceiling window-wall that overlooked the bay. "What do you think is wrong? You come in here talking about how horrible it is here! I know how bad it is! You think I like reading these shitty self-help books all the time?" He sighed and ran a hand through his hair and looked at the locks in disgust, wishing he could have even the tiniest bit of gel or a professional to cut away his split ends instead of one of the island’s women whom he really didn’t trust with scissors. He spoke slowly. "Talking about the outside only makes us remember what we are missing, and I don’t want to think about it. We should try to cope with what we are dealt."

Kyo walked slowly to him and with a sigh let his forehead rest on the older man’s shoulders blades at the center of his back. "Always so reasonable."

"Someone new is coming to the island." Yoshiki said quietly, letting his forehead touch the cold glass.

Kyo lifted his head. "Really?"

There was new people coming into the island all the time. Mostly older men who once worked for the CIA or FBI and had looked in files they shouldn’t have. There were not many women on the island, only a few. It wasn’t very safe for the women on the island since they made up only ten percent of the population, they all stayed in groups, usually never straying far from each other for safety.

"Who is it?" Kyo asked. "Anyone we might have heard of?"

Yoshiki shrugged. "No one I’ve ever heard of. He’s a nobody that hacked into some government files and found out some classified garbage he shouldn’t have. Like the rest of us he was stolen away and tomorrow he comes to the island to join the rest of us."

Hacker… "I miss my computer." Kyo sighed again and flopped down on Yoshiki’s bed. They weren’t even allowed the simplest computers here, the officials afraid they would find a way of getting of the island; which meant there must have been one. One, which they have been looking for, for quite a while.

Toshiya rubbed the pin prick on his arm. They said it had been a vaccination but he had a suspicion it wasn’t. Not after he had been gagged, hog-tied and kidnapped. He sat with his shaking hands in his laps and looked around nervously.

Where was he? It had been almost one am when the lights in his apartment had gone out, when his computer had shut down and he heard the door of his studio apartment slamming open. He didn’t remember anything after that. He wondered if he were still in Kyoto, or if they had taken him somewhere else completely. And who was "they"?

The sterile doctor’s office was totally blanket. He shifted and heard the crinkle of the tissue paper beneath his backside. He always hated those tiny beds tilted up towards the front end, especially when he was a child and got hurt a lot.

The walls were a dull white with no posters usually seen in these rooms. No instruments that were sharp or could be used as a weapon was in the room, or at least were all in locked cabinets.

His left ankle had been handcuffed to the stirrups at the end of the bed, he didn’t even want to think about those! At least he was a man and those didn’t apply to him at all, he hoped. He turned to stone as the door started to open.

The man that entered was tall and very slim. Toshiya’s heart nearly stopped with he looked at the high cheekbones and wide eyes, but when those eyes turned towards him they were so cold he instantly shivered and any thoughts of his good looks went away. The eyes softened a bit as the man looked down at a clipboard. His beautiful purple hair hanging in his eyes. He tucked it away behind his ears.

"You seem to be in good health. I suppose we can take you there soon."

Toshiya tried to jump to his feet, forgetting the cuff on his ankle. He fell to the floor but managed to glare up at the man through the pain in the hip he fell on. "Take me where? What the hell is this!?"

The man smirked when he saw the skinny man looking at him from the floor. "What the hell is this?" He repeated. "Let’s see, you hacked your way into government files. Highly classified files. You could be put into prison for a good number of years for a thing like that. You would be, but the government really doesn’t want that information to get out."

Toshiya sputtered as he looked up at him. "I… I didn’t-"

"You didn’t do it on purpose?" Kaoru smirked again and rolled his eyes. "Don’t expect anyone to buy that." He walked slowly towards Toshiya and crouched down. Toshiya was frozen as Kaoru brushed his fingers over the tanned cheek. He quickly pulled away and stood up, backing away. "A guard will be in soon to take you to the helicopter."

As the man held the door handle Toshiya quickly called out, "To take me where?"

The man seemed to give him a pity look as he quickly fled the room.

The red head’s arms shot out and took hold of the doctor’s arm. "Did you give him the sedative?"

Kaoru jerked his arm away. "The nurse gave it to him." He stormed after Die as he moved towards the doctor’s office where Toshiya was cuffed. "He doesn’t deserve to go there!"

Die stopped and turned slowly back to Kaoru. "Doesn’t deserve to go there? Do you have any idea what files he saw?"

Kaoru shook his head. "No, but-"

"Exactly." The red head clutched the doctor’s arm in a death grip. "You don’t know what those files were, you have no idea what he knows about this country now, what he is not supposed to know! He went where he wasn’t supposed to know and now he has to be punished. He’s lucky though, it was hard getting rid of all the bodies." Die let him go and started to walk away. "If you are going back to the island be on the helicopter in ten minutes."

Kaoru stood motionless in shock, staring at the back disappearing in his office.

Die stared at the sedated man across from him as he buckled his seat belt. He hated riding on helicopters, especially with this pilot who couldn’t keep it steady. Toshiya stared blankly out the window at the deep blue of the ocean as it zipped past them; they had been in the air for almost thirty minutes.

He almost seemed mesmerized. Die shook his head, only the drugs taking effect. He looked over at the doctor sitting beside the patient. He was watching him with bright eyes, watching the other man’s face.

"I know what you’re thinking."

Kaoru nearly jumped right out of the plane, was he that obvious? His eyes shot to Die. "What?"

"You don’t think he should be here." Die shrugged and Kaoru felt relief pour through him. "He’ll fit in, most people do. If he doesn’t we can just lock him up if he starts trouble."

Kaoru looked sadly at the man who’s chart said was Toshiya. He never wanted to see this young man locked up in some tiny cell.

"We’re almost there." Die said, unaware of the emotions churning through the helicopter.

Yoshiki stood next to Kyo, his arm hooked casually behind him on the metal fencing. They were watching the helicopter arrive, along with all the other residents.

Kyo dropped the stub of his cigarette and smashed it with his foot. "Is it a man or a woman coming?"

Yoshiki kept watching as the helicopter landed. "Man, if you could call him that. He’s only twenty six years old… much too young to be in here."

Kyo glanced over at him. "So was I when I first got here."

Yoshiki nodded. "I know."

Toshiya squinted as the harsh light flashed into his eyes. It was very bright here, and the weather was hot, the air humid. He couldn’t see well besides the sun; everything was blurred and spinning. Toshiya stumbled once, nearly falling. He could vaguely make out that he was on a tropical island and he could hear Sea Gulls squawking as they flew over their heads. Why were they near the ocean?

Hopefully, Toshiya smiled in a goofy way. They must still be in Kyoto! Maybe he could get home!

Someone grabbed his arm harshly and was pulling him roughly off the helicopter platform and down steep steps. The hand held tighter to keep him from falling.

As he tried to look around he noticed large groups of people watching them but was too out of it to try to figure out who they were. He was too high to notice the grim or hostile looks on their faces, and that all the men wore blue, the women pink.

Kaoru took Toshiya’s other arm and looked at Die who was gripping him very hard that if he could feel anything he would be wincing. "I will take him to his room, Die."

Die eyed him suspiciously but only nodded and let go. "He’s in Section 10, room 4."

Kaoru noted that room was one of the farthest from his own… It could just be a coincidence though.

Kaoru led him to the room, followed by an armed guard as usual when anyone new came to the island. Kaoru opened the door and stepped in sighing. The rooms were very boring. This one had blue, stiff bed coverings with matching sheets. The carpets were pale, faded blue. They were faded from the enormous windows that overlooked the ocean. There were two bed stands, one with a lamp on it, the other with an alarm clock. There was a bookshelf beside the bathroom door, filled with the same self-help, exercise, and nature books as every other room. There was only one chair, in the corner between the enormous windows. There was only one because the residents were not encouraged to have others in their rooms, even though they were never punished for it.

Kaoru led Toshiya to sit in that chair, keeping him from falling on his face. He knelt down at looked at him.

"My head hurts…" Toshiya whined, as he looked around. "Where am I? I want to go home!"

Kaoru sighed and stood up. "You are home."
