My Lilith Fair 99 Experience

pretty, eh?

I attended Lilith fair in Edmonton. It was the last (at least for now) Lilith Fair ever. It was an exciting experience, even though it rained the entire time! I had never been to Lilith Fair before, so it made it that much more special to me. I flew into Edmonton early that morning and I waited at the gates at Commonwealth Stadium at 1pm, 2 hours before they opened. There were already quite a few people there. When the gates opened, it was a mad dash to lie down our tarps close to the stage. My friend and I were looking for a spot, (all the ones at the front were taken) when a guy came along and covered up the wires that ran down the middle with mats. He said we could put our tarp in it! right front center with only 1 tarp in front of ours! Then we met and chatted with some of the people around us, and went and looked around at the tents. I didn't buy anything, but I got a lot of free samples. Anything I would have bought would have just gotten wet anyway. Soon after, we returned to our tarp, and remained there talking to people until someone came on stage (several hours later). From my spot I could not see, but I could hear the second stage. There were performances from K's Choice, Melanie Doane and Tara McLean. The first act on the main stage was Deborah Cox. Then we heard from the Indigo Girls, Dixie Chicks and Sheryl Crow. The whole time the front was packed together so tight, that some people coudn't breathe. If someone needed out, they would be pryed out of the crowd, and they would crowd surf over to the railing where the security people would let them go through. There were two incidents of streaking and one incident mass flashing during the show. The first happened during Sheryl Crow's set. He was the older guy in the picture to the left. The second incident was two young guys during "Building a Mystery". When Sarah was performing, bandmembers from the other artists' bands came between the railing and the stage and lifted their shirts up for Sarah to see. I don't have pictures of that, it was too dark, and I would have been just heads, but they were so close that I could reach out and touch them.
Sarah's set was absolutely fantastic! She performed some songs from mirrorball and "Black and White". I was sad when it was over. You will notice that the pictures here aren't that great. I was using a disposable camera, and some didn't have flash.
