Calgary Broncos

1972

Founded: November 1, 1971 by Bob Brownridge as the Calgary Broncos of the World Hockey Association.

The Calgary Broncos were an original ten franchise in the World Hockey Association. The league put a team in Calgary anticipated a rival similar to the present Oilers-Flames rival called the Battle of Alberta, but this one would be between the Broncos and the Oil Kings.(Later re-named Oilers)

All hopes of the Broncos taking to the ice were crushed when the owner Bob Brownridge suddenly fell ill and a payment of $100,000 was due to the league. The WHA rolled away from Calgary on April 28, 1972 leaving Calgary with no pro hockey team. The league would later replace the Broncos with the Cleveland Crusaders.
