On Saturday, June 15th, 2002, the Bay of Quinte Branch of the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada will once again host a re-enactment of the June 1784 Loyalist landing at Adolphustown.

This special re-enactment in Adolphustown U.E. Loyalist Park at the very site where U.E. Loyalists landed will precede the fourth annual celebration of 'United Empire Loyalists' Day' in the Province of Ontario on Tuesday, June 19th.

The program will include:

  • the arrival of a small fleet of reproduction, flat-bottomed bateaux with rowers and passengers wearing appropriate period attire;

  • a landing ceremony complete with the drawing of lots;

  • a wreath-laying ceremony at the adjacent UEL Memorial Cemetery to honour those many Loyalists lying there;

  • a large, weekend-long encampment by Loyalist-period re-enactors in canvas tents like those used by the landing Loyalists;

  • period music and costumes, and

  • Loyalist flag-raisings and tours of the on-site Loyalist Cultural Centre and Museum.

    A significant history and genealogy exhibitors' booth area on the south lawn of the Loyalist Cultural Centre and Museum will feature:

  • genealogists who can provide advice on starting and pursuing your own family tree, whether Loyalist, pioneer or more recent arrivals;

  • representatives from UEL branches from across Ontario; and,

  • historical societies, genealogical societies, local craftspeople, booksellers, and others offering their knowledge, goods and enthusiasm.

    Food and refreshment will be provided all day by local vendors.

    The admission/parking fee for the day is $5 per carload; it includes entrance to the Loyalist Cultural Centre and Museum. Camping is extra, with electrical hook-up and tenting spaces still available (go to our Park web page for camping info).

    This plaque and an identical plaque erected by the Kingston UEL Branch have prominent positions at the two docks of the Adolphustown-to-Glenora car ferry, part of the Loyalist Parkway. The ferry Quinte Loyalist and a rugged sister vehicle-carrier travel cross the Bay of Quinte year-round, with a bubble-system helping to soften and break-up the thick winter ice. The Royal Union Flag flies from both shores. This road is the oldest public highway in Ontario, built between 1798 and 1801 and stretching from Kingston to Toronto. The Loyalist Parkway passes through Amherstview, Bath, Conway, Adolphustown, Glenora, Picton, Bloomfield, Wellington and Consecon.
