I am  descended from Fanny Webster /Chadwick? / Boobier  born  Brackley, [click for photos] Northampton, Northamptonshire

My paternal grandmother was Amy Louise Chadwick who married William Richmond of Colac, Victoria.

I got her birth certificate which showed  she was born 1877 Bacchus Marsh, Ballan Reg. Dist,  Vic. and her father was Henry Chadwick born London, bank clerk at Ballan, Victoria.
Henry Chadwick bc 1845 London, married in Victoria and said his mother was Fanny maiden name Webster, and father Henry Chadwick gentleman.
Searching for the birth certificate in England  for Henry  the son of Fanny and Henry Chadwick around 1845 had found none.

1852
Fanny Chadwick arrived by  sailing ship " John Taylor"  from England. in Melbourne Sept.1852 with one son, Henry Chadwick aged  6  .

Also  on the same ship  WM JAMES BOOBIER aged 26  - bc 1826.

Also on this ship a  MR  HENRY CABLE- [no age]  SEP 1852 " JOHN TAYLOR" British008 008 see middle name of Henry Chadwick [bc 1845]  first son.

William John Chadwick  was bc 1849  arrived from England October  1862  on board the "Prince of Wales", aged   11  with Hannah SKINNER  and her parents and siblings.[see below brownish text] She later married Williams brothe Henry Chadwick.

Births Sep 1850 ,  Webster  William John     Westminster  Vol 1 p  44[35]  - no mother was  MN  Mary Donahue and illiterate and father was a cook porter.
April 2009  sent for birth cert of one- I  hope his mother's surname is  Webster or Chadwick ? WRONG
If so it will be interesting to see who she puts as the father?

1851 CENSUS  WAS TAKEN 30 MARCH 1851 A SUNDAY NIGHT.
WILLIAM JOHN WEBSTER WITH BOOBIER AND FANNY WEBSTER WAS 1 MONTHS OLD ... BORN MAY 1850 AT

SO NOW I SEE THRERE IS A WILLIAM WEBSTER BORN IN MSX POPLAR  REGISTERED IN Mar  QTR 1850   SO COULD NOT BE 11 MONTHS OLD.. IN CENSUS  VOL 2 PAGE. 347

Webster  William    Poplar  2 347
1854.
Fanny  Webster CHADWICK married in Victoria, William James BOOBIER 1854.   St Peters church [East] Melbourne. Fanny  said on that  m certificate that she was a widow with 2 children and her husband had died October 1849.  At the time of her marriage she was living Collingwood, aged 29. She said then that she was the born Brackley Northamptonshire,  daughter of Joseph WEBSTER  farmer and Mary BENNETT .
On Marriage certificate: William James BOOBIER  occ. contractor, aged 27 [ b.c. 1837]  London, father was William Boobier, occ. merchant,  mother Mary Ann BETTGER

MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE William James Boobier to Fanny Webster Chadwick 1854 Victoria Australia .

So far NO PROOF EXISTS that any Henry Chadwick that died in England  October 1849  had been married to Fanny Webster.
NO PROOF EXISTS of Fanny Webster marrying any man named Chadwick anytime in England, Scotland or Wales.

[No Henry Chadwick death  is registered on the  free bmd site for  qtr. December 1849,  and none on the  St Catherine's film,; one death is reg for March qtr 1850 of a Henry Chadwick at Preston district, 7 236 - I  got his death certificate- wrong wife was with him at the time of death. I got this certificate today 16 Aug 2004 and it doe not give his father - but date of death does not tally  with our Fanny Webster of Brackley, Northamptonshire's  statement- and present at death was an illiterate person named Sarah Bryant in Brighton Hospital, his occupation was coachman, he was a male aged 30 yrs, date of death 27th January 1850]

The only  clues to the name  Henry Chadwick's father are all sourced from Fanny maiden name Webster,:

1 -  on her son Henry Chadwicks death certificate when he died 1882 in South Fitzroy - his father was said to be  Henry Chadwick  occupation gentleman - which was often used if his occupation was unknown. the informant was Henry's step father William James BOOBIER, produce Merchant, Sandhurst.

2 - on her 2nd sons marriage certif. William John Chadwick says his father was Henry Chadwick too!

Further investigation shows  that so far [Oct. 2008]  we have  no proof of  the father/s  of Fanny's sons ..

The 1851 Census in England covered all living souls and those on ships at anchor and in prisons:
The only possible Fanny  and two sons co shows here- no Chadwick family of the correct ages and names exists.

The PUZZLE  of where our ancestors lived in 1851  has been partly solved by "AMBLY" ON ROOTSCHAT  6 SEPTEMBER 2006

The things  I know about the folk above are :
Fanny Webster and her son Henry changed  surnames to CHADWICK on boarding ship to Australia   with  William Boobier  in 1852
From Census 1851 London it seems that  William John Chadwick  who joined Fanny BOOBIER in Melbourne, was named in England,  William  John Webster bc  Oct  1850 and was left  behind in England when his mother and borther Henry went to come to Australia, he left England when he was 11 years old travelling in the same ship as the Skinner family. [Often  infants were left in care of their grandparents ?]
Fanny Webster Chadwick said  [on her m cert Vic.] her mother's maiden name was Mary BENNETT b OXF.  But from the Census 1851 it seems that probable  Mary Bennett  had not married Joseph Webster, Fanny's father.

What I do not know
What is Mr Keeling.- a single landlord  in a big house? perhaps the father of William Webster aged 11m.in 1851 census. not likely as the Chadwick name is not for nothing.

Did Fanny Webster start life as a Bennett? and marry a Webster. perhaps her "father  Joseph Webster" was her husband actually and father of the children?
Think I'll look for Fanny Bennett marry a Joseph Webster near the place of birth of her first child Henry? nothing likely.

I decided  in the face of  evidence so far that
1) Fanny Webster  had not been  married in England to a Mr Chadwick Dec 1849, as she said in Victoria m Cert.

2.) her mother told a white lie  on the census that her surname  BENNETT was her married name but  actually her maiden name? a small lie?

Perhaps there is a Mr Henry Chadwick  in London who was the father of Fanny's children  but Fanny Webster did not marry him!  Good idea thank you  to brilliant  Carol  on rootsweb - and she found one possible

"Private schools.
During the 19th century, especially in its early and middle years, Edmonton was noted for its private schools. (fn. 19) In 1833 there were 8 small day-schools, of which two dated from 1819 and 1820 respectively, which were run at the parents' expense and attended by a total of 117 children. There were 10 boarding-schools, three of them opened since 1818, attended by 282 boys and 178 girls. (fn. 20)

By 1851 (fn. 21) there were 85 teachers in Edmonton, including 13 governesses and one private tutor, and 392 children at 13 boarding-schools. The largest boarding-school was College House in Upper Fore Street, next to the Bell inn, which was attended by 93 boys and run by the White family from before 1840 (fn. 22) until 1887 when it moved to Eastbourne."

Wonder where I might find any school records for this  White's school?

The earliest records  relating  to Fanny Webster of Brackley are from the Mormons LDS records :-
Fanny Webster :  IGI
Christening:  07 Apr 1822   Brackley, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England
Parents: Joseph WEBSTER    Mother:  Mary [BENNETT mother's maiden name-  from her m certificate in Victoria]

And their  IGI:
Mary's surname  was BENNETT   in  the Oxfordshire  IGI  of a marriage between Joseph Webster and Mary Bennett 16 November 1803 at Dunstew Oxfordshire - Oxfordshire film no 72 50014 /14
--------------------------------
So I believe that our Fanny Webster was born around  1820  at Brackley. Northamptonshire England, her father was Joseph Webster and  mother Mary Bennet.

The 1841 Census for  Brackley showed no Websters  in Brackley St James.parish but in St peters parish:

So i  think   her mother might be Mary Bennett [ Fanny said her mothers maiden name was Mary Bennett]  as she has a small baby to care for.

So I look for Fanny Bennett getting married about 11 years ago from 1851 census and lo and behold free bmd shows a possible m to  Mr LEES then why is she called WEBSTER

"Harriet wasn't a sister of Fanny ...... a cousin she probably was!
Fanny was staying with her Cousin Harriet and her husband as well as Harriet's younger sister..... Fanny was born 50 miles away from her cousins, but they appear never to have lost contact as a family!!
Joseph & Mary WEBSTER   moved to London as per William the son's birth in London, Middlesex approx 1821-1825
John (Joseph's brother?) & Mary stayed in Glinton, Northamptonshire .... but at least two of their girls moved to London.....one of them got married ie Harriet.........then Fanny who was living north of the Thames ie Middlesex then moved to south of the Thames ie Surrey.......just a few miles away.

Re: Little Bourke street. "Chinese immigrants settled here in the 1850’s, creating the oldest continuing China-town in the Western world. Bars and hotels behind the Bourke Street theatres were also pick-up places for prostitutes who operated out of the hotels and brothels in Little Bourke and Lonsdale Streets, Melbourne’s most notorious streets. Contemporaries may have exaggerated the criminality of the ‘back slums’, stigmatising residents who were more poor than vicious."

HELP PLEASE -
RE "my uncle Vernon Arthur Chadwick. [bc 1910 ?? son of Arthur Vernon Chadwick.]

I am anxious to make contact with his daughters.  I know not where they are.

Vernon married a Mildred Feagon and had two daughters, Margaret CHADWICK and Patricia CHADWICK -b.c.?

After the war they evidently divorced.  His second wife was Dorothy (surname unknown), they lived in Brisbane until his death in 1971.  According to my mother at some stage the daughters wished to make contact with their father but "  .... never did.
