Questions for January 30, 2001

1. Carol Cornwall Madsen speaks of "the second endowment, second anointing, or more precisely the fulness of the priesthood" being administered only "upon recommendation" by the President of the Church. Apparently this was administered from time to time in the early days of the Church. Is there documentary or other evidence for the administration of this ordinance in more recent times, say the second half of the twentieth century?

2. Madsen also speaks of prayer circles, apparently with the help of Quinn's research. In 1896, women prayer circles was discontinued, and in 1978, men's prayer circles were likewise done away with. Why did these changes take place? Are prayer circles ever held today outside of the endowment ceremony?

3. One of the items in John Lundquist's temple typology deals with the significance of the temple for a particular community. The temple is seen as the giver of prosperity, and its destruction is seen as the downfall of the community. With this in mind, what is the significance of the rebuilding of the Nauvoo Temple?
